So she changed the rules. After my mum, babies could use an area of the library where they could make noise. Children who bent or marked books weren't charged damage fees.
The first mum & baby group was at Minet Library circa 1972 and was a talk from Women's Lib.
#libraries. When she had me she noticed there were few spaces where women could meet other mums & keep their brains active. She also noticed I loved handling books but was excluded from libraries as I couldn't be silent & careful... she started a huge campaign. Articles for the library gazette etc..

When my future dad was divorced by a woman who took everything & living in a damp lonely bedsit- he would sit in the library every night for warmth, company and he was obsessed with reading, like her, so they met.

I’ll never forget what that’s like (and honestly, I’m still traumatized), but I’ll always remember the support, such as colleagues from a previous contract job sending me a surprise care package that included money and a card signed by all of them. That card is on my fridge to this day. #libraries
