I learned recently that it’s an insult in Germany to call someone “hobbyless” or to engage in “hobbyless behavior” and it’s become my favorite way to think of assholes who have nothing better to do than to make other people miserable. Get a hobby. Build a model train and calm down.

So much of our language reflects
the common “car first” bias around our streets, & we should never forget that much of that language was the result of deliberate campaigns to specifically re-write our perspective of streets as “for cars only.” This is one of the more subtle, but important, examples.

A new canal has been dug to allow for future planned ship routes across the harbor. This cut off the peninsula west of the city, turning it into an island and creating more space for future expansions of the harbor :)

The square on the right used to be a big parking lot. And their were 4 car lanes instead of 2 for public transport.

Like many other cities, Utrecht was very much car-oriented.

But Utrecht made some tough and bold choices and became the city many people admire today.

In France, legislation came into effect recently for all car parks that have over 80 spaces to be covered with solar panels. Estimated to add around 11GW of renewable energy capacity to the national grid. Why not do likewise in Scotland? Braehead, Silverburn, Glasgow Fort etc.
