I've recently made some changes to the gallery of all my data visualisations 📊
Most examples now have links to the underlying source code! If you see something you like, you can see how it was made 🤩

This is incredible: Google Has a Secret Reference Desk. Here’s How to Use It. I knew some of these but not all, e.g. verbatim mode “returns results for exactly what you typed, stripped of personalization and synonym-swapping.” [cardcatalogforlife.substack.com]
Close up with a beautiful nudibranch on a rocky reef. The lower half of the image is a palette of swatches made from the nudi's vibrant colours.
Once upon a time I just admired nudis and sea slugs.
But it was not enough. Now apparently I'm creating an R package to celebrate their colour palettes? 😅
First up, my Sydney fave, Hypselodoris bennetti.

Hayao Miyazaki films start in his sketches—his "image boards." It’s a habit he’s kept up for 60 years.
He works fast and loose, mainly in pencil and watercolor. Perfection isn't the goal. But you can trace his growth through the pictures. We explore:

“It is easier to go to the moon than it is to beat the Dodgers”
Man standing outdoors beside a large decorative egg sculpture mounted on a pedestal. The egg is covered in a geometric pattern of triangles and star shapes in black, white, and shades of yellow and gold. The man wears sunglasses and a grey T-shirt, looking up toward the sculpture. In the background are trees, parked vehicles, a small building, and a flagpole under a lightly clouded sky.
The Vegreville Pysanka, or Ukrainian Easter Egg, isn't just a very famous roadside attraction, it is a true marvel.
It influenced the design of the Space Shuttle.
It was a notable first in computer modelling.
Oh, and it is also a weather vane!
This is its story.

Large explosion erupting from the surface of a body of water, sending a dense, dark plume upward and outward. The blast forms jagged, branching shapes with debris and spray spreading in all directions. Ripples and disturbed water surround the impact area. On the right, a tree-covered shoreline or small island sits low against the water. The sky above is filled with layered clouds, some darker and thicker near the explosion.
On April 5, 1958, Ripple Rock in Seymour Narrows was destroyed using 1,300 tons of explosives to make the area safer for ships.
The explosion sent debris 300 metres into the air and moved 635,000 metric tons of rock and water.

Remember the days when we saw the images the astronauts took only after they got back to Earth and the film was developed and the news magazines were printed?
A full disc image of Earth, as seen from the Orion Crew Module. The planet is a pale blue, swirling with white clouds and glowing slightly lighter blue in place from reflected light. At lower left, a large brown landmass is Africa, with Spain and Portugal with twinkling lights where the planet curves. At top right, auroras glow in a thin green glow, just barely separated from the planet's surface. Earth is set against the black of space (pic: NASA/R.Wiseman)
More context on this #Artemis II image:
* This is the night side, lit by moonlight. You can see city lights in Spain & Portugal, & a sliver of day at lower right
* The Sun is entirely behind Earth, which makes it a kind of solar eclipse, but w/ Earth doing the eclipsing instead of the Moon:

"The project isn't the deliverable. The project is the vehicle. The deliverable is the scientist that comes out the other end."
And
"We have centuries of accumulated pedagogical wisdom telling us that the attempt, including the failed attempt, is where the learning lives."
"속기 쉬운" -- haha!
Understanding both the data and the context is an essential first step in data analysis. This little example is a great teaching tool to get people thinking about the questions to ask...and how to go about finding the answers (e.g. Is there a data dictionary?)
"Wildly out of step with the moment" perfectly sums up where my brain has been for at least a year. I just didn't have an expression for it...until now.
The way some of these drivers are like "Aaaaaa pedestrian!" and slam on the brakes like a crosswalk is the last place they ever expected to see one
A generous review of Storytelling with Data that highlights what is different about this 10th edition. 📊
Might be the greatest opening paragraph of anything ever.

This week's piece is a collection of memories from my time living in Edwardian Britain. You can read the full thing for a minimum of £2 (and get access to everything new I post, plus a massive archive of writing) www.tom-cox.com/memories-of-...
Black and white photo of a tabby cat standing on its hind legs to investigate an open fridge, but looking over at the camera. Handwritten text on the edge reads “The raid”.
The Raid. Photo from my collection, no date/info.
This is such a fantastically wonderful book by @dj-acid-reflux.bsky.social ...it doesn't fit neatly into any particular genre and is hard to describe in a few characters, which a part of what makes it so good.
unreal sky on the namib desert cam!!!! plus oryx youtu.be/ydYDqZQpim8
Exactly. I would also add the problem was amplified by the VERY poor communication about the change both inside and outside the UK
Another day, another stupid Excel chart.
People say genius can't be rushed but I think what isn't pointed out nearly enough is that non-genius also shouldn't be rushed. Non-geniuses are no less entitled to a personal quota of idle wandering, breaks to consume cake, staring blankly out a window and taking 11 days to reply to a text message.
Most people rejected his message. They hated Freud because he told them the truth.
For the love of all the gods, don't read this shite. Read Everything Will Swallow You by proper writer Tom Cox @dj-acid-reflux.bsky.social instead. You won't regret it.
You might have a love-hate relationship with daylight saving time, but research shows that urban wildlife may stand to benefit
Two people on bikes riding towards camera, and on person on a mobility scooter away from camera on Fort St (2 way) protected bike and roll lane.
Person on bicycle passing person on mobility scooter on Pandora protected bike and roll lane.
On a short visit to downtown #VictoriaBC today, I saw three people riding mobility scooters on the protected bike and roll lanes. Only got photos of two. You don't have to ride a bicycle to use 'bike lanes'! #yyj #pwd #bcpoli
Might I suggest there needs to be "Eddelbuettel's Law" that explicitly defines the software subscription process?!
