A Shoutout to Those That Do Cool Shit – Jonathan Antunez Time to award(?) another ASTTDSC mention. Today, it goes to friend of Troutrageous! and one of the most interesting anglers I know, Jonathan Antunez. To put it simply, Jonathan is a student of the game. And when I mean student, I mean someone who kind of zigs while others zag. While everyone's all about euronymphing and tossing streamers these days, Jonathan's pouring hours into reading books from the 17 & 1800s to gather nuggets of information that can help his fishing today.

Exercise in Video Making Futility: Valley Creek Tenkara While I embed videos here all the freakin' time, it's rare that I post a fishing video of my own... or at least a video that I took more than 30 seconds to edit. Why?  Well, first, I mostly fish alone and I don't have the patience to set up the camera to get all cinematogramatic... second, editing video sucks... and three,  I'm not

T! Friday Fly-Fishing Film Festival 04.10.26 Let's ring in the weekend with a T! Friday Fishing Film Festival. I think we all deserve some escape from what was certainly a heavy week. But before we do, it would be great if you'd take in this video on a subject that impacts us all. The government recently announced plans to reorganize the US Forest Service that have sparked some serious concerns for the future of our public lands.

Sasquatch Has Nothing on the Phi Kong Koi of Laos My friend Bill has a way of sending emails and texts completely out of nowhere. His most recent dispatch arrived with the subject line "Sasquatch of Sorts in Laos," and it did not disappoint. Bill (Right) in the field / Photo: Isthmus Bill has spent quite a bit of time doing fieldwork in Laos and apparently somewhere wedged in his notes from the late 1990s is this gem: a set of instructions from local Lao villagers on how to attract a…

(Possible) Dream Job Alert: Cortland Line Is Hiring In addition to real estate listings, I also look at job boards for "dream jobs" that involve fly fishing. My job can be stressful, but I like it. However, it's unfortunately far away from trout water. Indeed had a job posting that popped up over the weekend that wasn't a guide job, rather a supply chain listing for Cortland Line…

Wanna Buy a Bonefish Flat? Only $49.5 Million, No Big Deal You know the drill by now. First it was a Scottish salmon river, then a Catskills trout headquarters, even a tiny chunk of Wisconsin Driftless. it's fun to daydream about owning fishing real estate. Yesterday, Gray's Sporting Journal sent an email blast out with something extremely daydream worthy: The Salinas. Located on the southern tip of Long Island in the Bahamas, not the one with the traffic and the strip malls, the one surrounded by turquoise water.

Box of Rain – A Fly Fishing Substack Worth Your Time I spend a decent amount of time crawling around the corners of the internet looking for fly fishing content worth sharing, and every now and then something lands in my feed that really draws me down a rabbit hole. Box of Rain, a Substack from someone who goes by CosmicJohn, was one of those finds, and has become a favorite read over the past year.

I've caught two fish in the riffles after the pool under the dam my whole life. That's it. Nothing in the pool proper. Even though folks probably think it makes for a good photo, they should take that thing out.

Sadly, it does feel that way. It's not even nostalgia for the past, it's just asking yourself, "would I like to eat/shop/etc... here?" I can't see how any of the suits making these changes to save a few bucks could justifiably say yes.

Little Valley Creek Is Being Shortchanged: Sign the Bishop Tube Letter Now This is not an April Fools' joke. If you fish Valley Creek or Little Valley Creek in Pennsylvania, or if you care about clean water in the Delaware River watershed, I need a few minutes of your time. Sound good? Here's the sorta short version... Bishop Tube, a former industrial site in Chester County, has been contaminating Little Valley Creek with toxic pollutants for roughly 50 years.

Ross Cimarron Creek Reel – USA Made Click & Pawl with a 3D Printed Twist "The First Open Source Click Pawl Reel Ever Made" That's a bold marketing statement, right? Bro, check out my new reel... I love a nice click & pawl reel. Ross Reels just came out with a new model, the Cimarron Creek, which is fully machined in the USA and has a relatively low price of $249. Whether or not you like the aesthetics of the Cimarron Creek, that's a pretty nice product/price value proposition.

Rise Fishing Co. Is Blowing Out Overstock Euronymphing Rods Thank you for allowing me to vent about McDonald's yesterday. Now back to regularly scheduled programming. I was so behind on my email inbox. Just tons of emails backing up my "fly fishing specific" account. You can tell it's spring and all the manufacturers are sending out some of their best offers to anglers across the internet. Both on new gear, and perhaps some deals on last year's gear that just didn't move to their liking.

I Grew Up on Happy Meals. This New McDonald’s Made Me Sad. A few weeks ago, a brand new McDonald's restaurant opened no more than a few miles from my front door. There are other McDonald's locations in the general area, but this is now the closest one, and the one I figured I'd frequent if so inclined. Now, yes, I know McDonald's isn't necessarily the healthiest dietary choice, just like most other fast foods, but I'm not above it.

One visit to their newest location sent a clear message: Get out.

Logjam There was so much downed timber in the water, far more than I remember last summer. The big, heavy kind that isn't easy to navigate. You can't go around it, thanks to the thick rhododendron lining each bank. You just need to climb it and go over. Or under if there's enough clearance. Sometimes it wasn't even tree trunks impeding one's progress, a thick collection of dead branches served as a equally effective deterrent to upstream wading.

Restoring Michigan’s Long Lost Arctic Grayling Nice video from Great Lakes Now and Detroit PBS about the efforts to re-establish the arctic grayling population in northern Michigan. I enjoyed the "behind the scenes" on the conservation efforts taking place. Grayling haven't swam in Michigan waters for over a century; I really hope they're successful reestablishing wild populations over the long haul. Give it a watch, and learn more here.

When We All Fished in the Same Place Nostalgia is a dangerous thing. Your fond memories of a time, place, or thing tend to sugarcoat the actual events as they happened. But in this scenario, I don't think that's fully the case. This video started it all for me in 2009... Those late twenty-aughts and early tens were such a fun time for me in fishing, and more specifically, tenkara.

Annual Renewal We received the notice from our local tax collector that is was time to renew the registration on my wife's SUV this past week. A mere formality, but something I still do one year at a time instead of taking the option to renew for 2 years. It's in the hopes this may finally be the year we pick up and move out of Florida.

L.L. Bean and Orvis Tag Team? Prologue: Ever have an idea, think it's good, spend a lot of time developing it, and the further and further it got along the more you realized it was hot garbage? Well, that's what this post is. It was early December 2025 and being uninspired by L.L. Bean's recent fly fishing offerings, I envisioned a marriage of sorts. But the more I read, and re-read what I wrote, the more stupid I realized it was.

A Brisk Start to February What a wild past three weeks it's been. Work was nuts (as it always is in late January & early February), but that's finally calmed down a bit with the NFL season coming to a close. Congratulations to the Seattle Seahawks. Redington Classic Trout Reel Now, you didn't expect me not to comment on this one, right? Yeah, appears Redington is going to release their new Classic Trout reel tomorrow, February 3rd, 2026. As both a Classic Trout rod and general click & pawl reel devotee, I can only say it's about time! See, the one thing that's bugged me about the Redington reel lineup over the past few years is that they kind of deviated from the timeless aesthetics used on their previous click & pawl reels.

Is it May Yet? First off, if you have power to read this, I appreciate it. I understand that Winter Storm Fern is probably messing with a bunch of you in some form today. Snow, sleet, ice. Clearly some messy weather that could gum up the works for the next few days for those in her path. I hope everyone impacted is safe and warm.
