Repurposing of a DNA segregation machinery into a cytoskeletal system controlling cell shape Bacteria, like eukaryotes, use conserved cytoskeletal systems for intracellular organization. The plasmid-encoded ParMRC system forms actin-like filaments that segregate low–copy number plasmids. In m...

A black and white photo of two trout missing their dorsal fins, taken in 1936.

In 1936, a U.S. Forest Service ranger was fishing high in the Utah mountains when he found something bizarre:

Cutthroat trout with tiny - or missing - dorsal fins! 🧵

It is! When I first saw this a few years ago I immediately wondered: did humans learn to sew by watching these birds??

Fellow academics, I suggest you don't advise your graduate students to apply for jobs in the US unless they hold American passports. It's irresponsible.

By all means, if you're deciding, take the time you need. But if you're deciding between two places, and there are three others you've ruled out, let those three know as soon as possible, not once you've picked a school

You could make a huge difference to someone else's life

Some molecular machines, like ribosomes, can persist for long periods of time in cells.

Could molecular aging of ribosomes shape how proteins are made?

In our new preprint we track ribosomes as they age in cells and uncover unexpected effects on translation (1/10)

To study ribosome molecular aging, we developed a bio-orthogonal HaloTag strategy to label ribosomes in living cells.

This enables us to track ribosomes over time and purify defined age populations, allowing us to study how ribosome composition and function change with age. (2/10)

I was sad to learn that my postdoctoral mentor, David Botstein, died yesterday. I started with David as a postdoc in 1998, and he had a profound effect on both my life and scientific career. He was a giant in the field of genetics, making seminal contributions in both yeast and human genetics. 1/

Oh no! David had a huge influence on so many of the ways our research has been done 💔
