Only 12 people on Earth saw this 'ring-of-fire' eclipse. Here's how one improvised to capture a once-in-a-lifetime photo from Antarctica A remote Antarctic research team became the only people on Earth to witness a rare annular solar eclipse — and one scientist had to improvise to capture it.

Good work! Shows nicely that ONLY the zodiacal light is responsible for the 'glow' behind the Moon with no contribution from the K corona. (Told you so, NASA, from day one.)

This rather creepy photo is Artemis II’s heat shield underwater, as taken by the U.S. Navy. This is the first photo we have of the heat shield, and upon initial examination it doesn’t seem to have the char loss that Artemis I’s had.

Rubin bags 11,000 new asteroids! This is just the beginning, too. There are more millions more out there waiting to be seen.

The Vera Rubin observatory has already discovered 11,000 *previously unknown* asteroids... and the proper observing sessions haven't even begun yet!

The Earth and the Moon aren't the only interesting things in this photograph, taken 54 years ago today - April 20, 1972.
Apollo 16's Charlie Duke and John Young were in the Lunar Module when Charlie captured this wonderful shot. Ken Mattingly is in the other spacecraft seen orbiting the Moon.

Helle Fassaden nicht das Hauptproblem der #Lichtverschmutzung:
problematischer:
-große Werbeflächen/beleuchtete Schriftzüge (Werbewand Pragsattel/ beleuchtete Schriftzüge an Firmengebäuden)
-helles, blaues Licht an Tankstellen
paradox: Straßenbeleuchtung ausgeschaltet, aber grelle Werbung erlaubt.

I’ve fired one of America’s most powerful lasers – here’s what a shot day looks like It would take hours to set up the perfect shot at the Texas Petawatt Laser facility. Once it fired, the beam released an incredible amount of energy.

Ihr seht gerade die schmale Mondsichel am Westhimmel? Es lohnt sich, mit einem Fernglas hinzuschauen, sie steht nämlich direkt oberhalb der Plejaden! 🔭

The comet of the hour, C/2025 R Pan-STARRS reached perihelion today at ~7:00 UT/3:00AM EDT, 0.499 AU(46.4 million mi) from the Sun , just exterior to the orbit of Mercury. Currently shining at magnitude +4, dedicated astros are still managing to nab the comet before it’s engulfed in the Sun’s glare.

Mont Blanc (4,806 m) and Dôme de Miage (3,673 m) this afternoon 😍

Not much snow for the season... ❄️🔥
For weeks now, the temperatures have been typical of June! 🥵

Do you find that pleasant?
The Earth doesn't.

Ask Ethan: How long does it take planets to form? Every time a new star forms, there's an opportunity to form planets alongside and around it. How does it happen, and how long does it take?

Ask Ethan: How long does it take planets to form?

Just 35 years ago, we knew so little about how planets formed, or how long the process took.

Here in 2026, we now have a complete end-to-end story: validated by actual data.

Orbital view of a cloud formation over the icy north polar cap of Mars. The main cloud formation sits in the lower part of the ice cap and appears bright white, shifting to a slightly dustier tone closer to the ice cap. It resembles cirrus like clouds, formed in patches and curved bands shaped by wind. The polar cap below shows a spiral like structure, bordered by rust colored terrain with a faint hazy appearance.

CNSA’s Tianwen-1 mission has recently released new images of Mars, including this view of the north polar cap showing a very cool cloud formation.

#OTD in 1970, the Apollo 13 crew got their first glimpse of the damage caused by the explosion that occurred 200,000 miles from Earth.
The recent Artemis II mission helps us comprehend the gravity of the situation. NASA got the crew home alive.

Here's my photographic analysis of the damage:
