NEWS: New research reveals why some oesophageal cancers are so hard to treat
@oxfordoncology.bsky.social study found that high chromosomal instability is a key feature in most dangerous types.
New research led by @eileenparkes.bsky.social and co-authored by DPhil in Cancer Science Alumnus, Bruno Beernaert @oncology.ox.ac.uk, has uncovered new insights into why the most aggressive oesophageal cancers are so difficult to treat. 👇

Excited to announce a new review article that Andreas Villunger @villungerlab.bsky.social, Dario Rizzotto (not on bsky) and I wrote. In this article, we discuss mitosis as a central cell cycle stage for integrating DNA damage, cell death and inflammatory responses. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
We've got a new paper out! In collaboration with @stapleslab.bsky.social @cejkalab.bsky.social @lucyhjackson-j.bsky.social, we show that IFI16 binds to stalled replication forks, protects nascent DNA and mediates an inflammatory response to replication stress.

Pre-print alert! We have identified TMEM33 as a novel, intrinsic regulator of CD8+ T cell function and anti-tumor immunity - go check it out. Thanks to all involved!
Parkes lab pre-print alert! ‘TMEM33 deletion potentiates anti-tumor CD8⁺ T cell immunity.’ Led by mtjackson101.bsky.social. Full bluetutorial follows! 1/10 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
After some cake 🎂 (of course!) to celebrate Tim’s and Nacho’s birthdays 🥳, we wrapped up with fantastic postdoc talks. Big thanks to Bruno, Maria, Lisa and Qian for rounding off a #CIOawayday packed with inspiring science and great company! 😊
Fantastic joint lab meeting day with @eileenparkes.bsky.social and Ben O'Leary plus our groups. Lots of cool science and discussions! And that fancy dinner at Lincoln College!
Real pleasure to see this great piece of work mature over the past few years in @oxcio.bsky.social. Terrific bluetorial!
Excited to share our latest manuscript www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
This was a great collaboration with Drs. Huse, Lang, @jesserdixon.bsky.social
We’re thrilled to see our research has been highlighted as the cover of NCB this month 🎉 🎉. We are honoured to share this issue with thought-provoking articles investigating multiple aspects of chromosomal instability and mitosis @dfachinetti.bsky.social

🚨 Preprint Alert 🚨
Check this out to see how seemingly innocuous errors in cell division can drive an immunosuppressive tumour landscape in this hard-to-treat cancer.
With great thanks to all involved!
Model figure - in EAC cancers, as chromosomal instability (CIN) increases, we found that a CIN-driven cGAS-dependent axis drives myeloid directed chemokine expression and recruitment of tumor-favoring myeloid populations
Incoming - new preprint alert from the Parkes lab led by @brunobeernaert.bsky.social Full bluetutorial follows! 1/ 11 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
Congrats to Yelena Janjigian and team on their study in @naturemedicine.bsky.social, which presented biomarker analysis of nivolumab plus chemotherapy or ipilimumab in #gastroesophagealcancer. @mskcancercenter.bsky.social

Really excited to share our lab's first manuscript! I cant be more proud of our team, especially @nora-mae.bsky.social who diligently worked on this project.
It will be a long thread but I promise it's worth it!

Very cool to see my PhD work cited on the timeline of major discoveries in BRCA biology 😎 sparked my joy of discovery which I aim to instill in my students now
