Dense, dark forests in Europe are a modern phenomenon A new, comprehensive study shows that Europe’s landscapes over the past more than 20 million years have predominantly been a mosaic of grasslands, scrub and woodlands of varying density. A light...

Dense, dark forests in Europe are a modern phenomenon - Europe’s landscapes for 23 Myr were mostly tree- & flower-rich mosaics shaped by large herbivores, not dense #forests, see our new synthesis www.eurekalert.org/news-release... #forests #woodlands #paleoecology #nature #trees #refiorestation

Impact of historical land use change on the brown bear habitat connectivity in the Polish Carpathians Background Europe has undergone dynamic land use changes in recent decades that have affected the extent, quality, and connectivity of large carnivore habitats. However, the current distribution of la...

Our recent paper in @peerj.bsky.social shows the gradual improvement in bear habitat connectivity due to land use change in the #Carpathians. We found also that up to 40% of the current corridor was stable since mid-19th century.

Here is the place where life emerged from water onto land – traces of a tetrapod can be found there. It can be reached from Kraków in just an hour and a half.

Today, late in the afternoon we have officially closed the 8th #ForumCarpaticum. This year in Bratislava at the @comeniusuni.bsky.social . Great event, fantastic speakers and lots of energy around. Hope to meet again in 2027 in another Carpathian country!

Together with @egrabska.bsky.social we organised a session on historical ecology and geography: new perspectives for conservation and management. It was a great pleasure to listen to all the contributions. There is a huge potential in historical data, which might be used to protect the Carpathians!

Historical and recent land use/land cover changes as a driving force of biological invasion: a Hungarian case study - Biological Invasions The spread of invasive plant species is influenced by various geographic factors such as the topography, climate, soil and hydrology, but the importance of each factor varies according to the species....

Historical land use changes are useful in predicting current biological plant invasion. Check the Hungarian example - link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Wolves and bears as scapegoats in the political struggle
Science has been ignored in recent decisions on large carnivore management in Europe. All left to emotions, the pathway to authoritarianism

OK, so we decided not do skip a GeoTdF year, but this stage is so boring that it's begging for some geo-info!

We're riding along the North Sea coast towards Dunquerque. But even as recent as 20.000 years ago, there was no coast here! During the last ice age, the Channel was dry!

WUI matters not only for the wildfires. What is even more interesting, in the Carpathians, past WUI matters much more in carnivore damage prediction than current WUI. Check out our analysis focused on 🐺 and 🐻!

Rožmberk is the largest fishpond in the world. It's area is 4.9-6.5 km2, depending on the water level. It is one of the five hundred fish ponds, constructed from the 13th century onwards in Třeboňsko region in South Bohemia.
