🚀 Excited to team up with @UBuffalo’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science to host a workshop on automated speech recognition (ASR) in education! 🎙️📚
We'll dive into how ASR can support learning and provide hands-on training focused on children’s speech.

Universal Pre-K as Economic Stimulus: Evidence from Nine States and Large Cities in the U.S. www.nber.org/papers/w3376...
"Notably, each dollar spent on UPK generated between 3 to over 20 dollars in aggregate earnings – enough that tax revenues might fully cover costs."
New dashboard explores some of the factors impacting students’
opportunities to learn and the disparities in opportunity to learn experienced by Black and white students in a given state.

🌟What if early educators were paid like K-12 teachers? New evidence from Washington, DC shows what would happen: more stability in the child care workforce, higher-quality caregiving, and greater mental health and financial well-being for early educators.🌟

Hey #edusky and #econsky - the Education Data Portal has been updated with IPEDS fall data collection, CCD, CRDC (through 20), and SAIPE through 2023. Have at it and know further updates to CRDC and IPEDS are forthcoming!

Could not have been possible without my awesome cohort mates!
Thank you, Brandon! Your support and encouragement mean so much to me. We've come a long way since our days as masters students at @teacherscollege.bsky.social!
What kind of research was cancelled by Dept of Ed?
Bread & butter work to improve kids' achievement & lives:

ICPSR at U Mich is coordinating the archiving of at-risk federal data (all of it?)
You can upload data you have & search for data you don’t have

Knowing what works, for whom, and under what conditions is one of the most powerful tools I can imagine in public policy. Adding cost effectiveness analysis can improve efficiency while understanding context supports generalizability.
Education scholar friends: People don’t necessarily understand the value of education research in the same intuitive way they understand the value of research into cancer, etc. Drop examples of high-impact edu research in the thread below. #edusky

Another great resource: the Segregation Tracking Project. We built off NCES data to create Longitudinal Imputed School Database. Race/eth and free lunch data for every school in the US 1991-2022. We impute erroneous/missing data but retain original CCD values.

🌟 Did you know that most federal education data are archived in the @urbaninstitute.bsky.social Education Data Explorer? It's a great resource for research and analysis - and there's even a full API version linked in thread. 🌟

New evidence confirms what we know well: starting early is best for students, families, and education systems.
Great new essay from @anikaalam.bsky.social and our DC PreK study team published by the Learning Curve @urbaninstitute.bsky.social.

Sometimes researchers are lucky enough to study solutions.
Our work on DC's Early Childhood Educator Pay Equity Fund is 2 years in the making and findings are clear.
We know now what a big change it has brought to people's lives. It was long overdue.

"A key implication for researchers is to appreciate that methodological expertise alone is insufficient, and that practitioners’ and families’ experiences with the education system and knowledge of local contexts constitute valuable forms of knowledge" journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....
I'm thrilled to see this site building a serious community of researchers, writers and policymakers focused on education policy and economics.
Below are links to 3 Starter Packs I've made to help you connect with such folks.

Hi, would love to be added. PhD candidate at Penn GSE
Hadn’t seen a women in education policy research starter pack yet. Please let me know if I missed you… still getting my bearings in the new place.

This is really important new evidence on early warning systems for absenteeism in action. Identifying students is a good first step but it still requires follow up resources and practices that adequately address their barriers to attendance!

Summer EBT programs are essential for child and family well-being. We can and must do more to combat food insecurity.
"Nearly 10 million children won’t get summer food benefits as states opt out of new federal program."
