An image split between a monochrome vintage photo and dark teal text. The photo shows a man in a lab coat working with scientific equipment. The text reads "Did You Know? Pasteur originally developed pasteurization to protect wine and beer from spoiling. Its later use for milk dramatically reduced foodborne illness and quietly reshaped everyday life worldwide."

#OnThisDay in 1862, Louis Pasteur demonstrated that gently heating liquids could prevent spoilage! This experiment laid the foundation for pasteurization, a process that transformed food safety and continues to protect public health today. 🧪

Join us on Wednesday, Ap...

I really appreciate @elizabethwithaz.bsky.social's reflections on how she explored the social impacts of technology with her students by introducing them to the people - the ghost workers - whose labor makes “AI” systems possible.

Everyone allowing or pushing for AI use should be required to spend a month living next to a data center to experience this sound and a restricted shower schedule due to its water consumption.

Say NO to more data centers! They consume an enormous and unsustainable amount of water and electricity from systems—and a planet—that are already depleted.

Yes, indeed, a network of strangers working to find a phage that could treat someone’s life-threatening infection with a multiple-drug resistant bacterium is a beautiful example of “the “kind” in humankind”

Brilliant simulation. But it makes my heart sink to see how much of the living earth we humans have destroyed and replaced with unsustainable infrastructure.

The true cause does matter because we will shift our prevention strategy accordingly. If we don’t appreciate the risk of new strains arising through natural mechanisms, and instead focus on controlling access or manipulations by researchers, we won’t invest enough resources on global detection.

Book cover of “Eats, Shoots & Leaves”, by Lynne Truss, that shows a panda bear standing on a ladder to paint a comma in the title.

Part of my transition to digital minimalism is reading paper books again. 📚 I was reading this treasure at the local library and hard pressed to keep my laughter below library decibel limits! If you, too, are a punctuation stickler, get thee to a library or bookstore!

A black-and-white photo shows Dr. Leila Denmark (center), an elderly woman with glasses, seated and smiling while looking at a baby who is laughing and facing her. Another younger woman is also seated to the right, laughing and placing her hand near the baby's midsection. The scene suggests a warm, inter-generational interaction, possibly in a clinical or home setting. Dr. Denmark was a pioneering pediatrician, known as the world's oldest practicing pediatrician upon her retirement at age 103.

She was the world's oldest practicing pediatrician until she retired at age 103 (practicing for 73 years). She died a supercentenarian #OTD in 2012 at the age of 114 years and 60 days.

For something very different and a little ridiculous (but had me rotflol at the library!) try “Eats, Shoots and Leaves” by Lynne Truss, a self-professed stickler for punctuation. (Game recognizes game!)
