Atlantic circulation weakens at four key ocean sites A new study has found that a deep branch of the Atlantic’s overturning circulation has weakened across four ocean monitoring sites over the past 20 years. That newly documented pattern turns a long-running climate warning into a measured change in the water itself, with consequences that could extend far beyond the open Atlantic. Deep ocean signals Along the Atlantic’s western edge, the weakening appears in deep-water records stretching from the Caribbean to the waters off Canada. By tying those records together, Qianjiang Xing at the University of Miami (UM) showed that the same decline runs through widely separated parts of the ocean. Three sites recorded a statistically clear drop, while a shorter northern record moved in the same direction without reaching that threshold. That consistency gives the signal unusual weight, but it also leaves a larger question open about how much of the full Atlantic circulation this western decline captures. Why this current matters The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) – a heat-moving Atlantic current system – carries warm surface water north and colder deep water south. As water cools near the North Atlantic, added salt makes it denser, so it sinks and helps pull more water behind it. That...

The Qiantang river's tidal bore is the world's largest and most powerful of its kind. Sometimes two tides meet together forming a shape like a cross, that can become even more captivating at sunset.

mRNA vaccines continue to show major promise.

In a small Phase 1 trial led by Dr. Balachandran, some patients with pancreatic cancer (one of the deadliest cancers) reached 6-year survival.

This is why sustained investment in science & research matters.

Coral reefs are nearing extinction. 2026 must mark a turning point | Jason Momoa At 1.5C of global warming, up to 90% of coral reefs could be lost. The next few months could be a defining moment

A great deal of the ocean's biodiversity is concentrated in coral reefs. Scientists warn that at 1.5C of global warming, up to 90% of coral reefs could be lost.

Ninety percent! And 1.5C is not lingering in the distance – it’s extremely close.

No pay wall.
