📢 We stand in solidarity with all those who are protesting to access their rights and call the Greek authorities to urgently ensure all have access to fair asylum procedures, procedural guarantees and dignified living conditions in open state facilities while their procedures are pending.
All of this is compounded by a climate of confusion, with people struggling to gain access to asylum procedures despite the suspension on asylum applications being lifted 2weeks+ ago. This was described as 'psychological pressure' to push those who are still detained to sign for deportation.
People report horrific detention conditions in the PRDC, including little to no access to hygiene and appropriate medical care, no clothes distribution and infestations of rats, bugs and snakes. Reports of police violence - both verbal and physical - were also made.
🚨 Today, with MIT's support, BVMN (@borderviolence.bsky.social) reports on 'Psychological pressure' in Amygdaleza: over 30 people started a hunger strike this week, asking for the respect of their rights to apply for asylum and to fair and dignified treatment. borderviolence.eu/reports/psyc...

🚨 Today, MIT joins 200+ others in calling for the rejection of the EU’s proposed “Return Regulation”. Really about deportation, it will expand detention, fuel racial profiling & weaken safeguards. Europe needs dignity, care & solidarity — not punishment & profit at the cost of fundamental rights.
On #InternationalDayofDemocracy, we must ask: can democracy coexist with the systematic violation of refugee rights ❓
Short answer: No.

🟠 BVMN’s May report is now online.
borderviolence.eu/reports/bvmn...
This is the first of a series of thematic reports, where we will look into overarching themes affecting people on the move across Europe.
BVMN is against the use of immigration detention in all its forms.
The decision of the CM to close the supervision of asylum procedures marks the loss of a critical mechanism of oversight into a defective and dehumanising system, at a time when the right of access to asylum is facing steady political erosion.
These include unstable access to asylum, chronic delays in asylum procedures, frequent technical issues with the online registration platform, the arbitrary use of the 'safe third country' concept, and issues with the effectiveness and accessibility of appeals procedures, among others.
✅ We appreciate the decision of the CM to continue monitoring living and detention conditions, and the lack of effective remedies.
❌We regret, however, the decision to stop monitoring asylum procedures, despite civil society repeatedly warning about serious flaws in Greece’s asylum system.

Enough is enough. We strongly urge the reversal of these measures, and expect Greek authorities and EU institutions to demonstrate commitment to the rights and values that bind us.
On 11 July, the Greek gov adopted a new law suspending asylum processing for 3 months, in addition to ordering the summary arrest, detention and deportation of all new arrivals. These amount to flagrant violations of EU and international law.
