Water Tables Rewire Wetland Methane Fate At the edge of a wetland, the world is built in layers.

Our latest post to Substack. 🌐🧪

New @science.org paper shows early-2020s methane spike driven mostly by a temporary slowdown in the atmosphere’s methane removal and climate-boosted natural emissions. IceLab’s @grocherros.bsky.social helped quantify methane from running waters, improving understanding of the global methane budget.

Emerging patterns of CO2 : O2 dynamics in rivers and their link to ecosystem carbon processing Aquatic metabolism is reflected in the dynamics of dissolved oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations. Thus, paired measurements of CO2 and O2 concentrations can capture the metabolic char....

My latest paper is now out in Limnology and Ocenography Letters @aslo.org, titled "Emerging patterns of CO2 : O2 dynamics in rivers and their link to ecosystem carbon processing". It is open access, so go read! I am mostly proud of this figure, which I spent a lot of hours figuring out how to do it

Teach hydro modeling? Want to introduce modeling in an intro class?

Check out this web-app, activities, and code (in case you want to spin off your own)..

Thanks @jansei.bsky.social for working with me on this, which was inspired by his HBV-lite teaching software!

NSF slashes number of ‘rotators’ and well-paid managers as part of restructuring Smaller future budgets will require fewer people, NSF official tells staff

1. After getting some further insight into changes at NSF (thanks to those who reached out), I deleted a previous post where I tried to make sense of Cheatham's memo as reported in the Science story below.

The spring flood as the snow melts is the most characteristic part of northern hydrology, but this year there will be no spring flood. We will be back to the data in a few weeks, but I have never seen this before

Today was the first field day in my ERC ARIMETH project! I installed a oxygen and water level sensor in Krycklan. It was a great field day, wearing t-shirt, sunny... But this is so wrong. Mid-april in northern Sweden means a thick snow cover, but this has been an abnormally warm and dry winter.

I had the pleasure to follow along Kriddie's PhD from the distance, and her work on carbon cycling in high altitude tropical streams. Now she's Dr. Kriddie!

Looking the get the most out of your stream CO2 data?

Check out the coupled O2-CO2 model developed by Jake Diamond and me, out today in JGRB!

The model extends the single-station O2 model by coupling DIC mass balance and carbonate buffering.

Can we develop a global #deeplearning #model for daily Soil CO2 efflux?

Results show
- #LSTM models can use existing data to generate synthetic data for temperate mesic regions
- challenges of transferring relationships learned from data-rich to data-poor sites

Map of global lake distribution, colored by the number of SWOT overpasses per 21 day cycle. There are many lakes with a high number of SWOT overpasses at high northern latitudes, but there are also tens of thousands to more than a million lakes on every continent. Lakes are graphed by latitude and longitude on the edges of the figure.

Happy International Women's Day! Despite the efforts, while much more women enter scientific fields, due to numerous factors, few manage to remain in the field or secure senior positions. Support your coworkers, call out harmful systemic behaviour. 😘

Home - NOAA Ocean Acidification Program NOAA's Ocean Acidification Program prepares us for the impacts of ocean acidification through research and interdisciplinary partnerships.

One of the people fired from NOAA today is the director of the Ocean Acidification Program. That program also leads the U.S. government's effort on marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). The destruction of American science is incomprehensible.
