This is the kind of future that would encourage me to actually go outside more. I get an aesthetically awesome mechanized chair that comes with built-in shade and snacks? Yes, please.

Our series finishes just before our dear Alice’s celebration of life and would-be birthday next week. Possible Futures was created in memory of and dedicated to Alice Wong. We carry forward her love, her rage, and her dreams of what could be.

(And she would have LOVED Ty’s mobility chair.)

The padded chair has robotic feet and is connected to a hydroponic garden, with a leafy canopy roof. The woman reaches up to grab a passion fruit off the canopy. I love the idea of future technology being a mere tool that fosters more community and access.

This illustration in particular is very Alice, as she was a frequent hostess who loved to make and share food with people.

“I think one of the things that happens very often when you’re disabled is becoming physically isolated from your community. Online communication is so helpful…but there’s something deeply irreplaceable about your friends coming to your house or vice versa, sharing a meal, laughing together.”

Illustration of three disabled friends gathering for hot pot.

On the left, a Black and Asian transmasculine individual beams into their friend’s home with a bag of fruits and vegetables. They wear glasses and a glucose monitor with a hologram display on their hip, and the teleportation device above them announces, “Arriving from: Chicago.” Next to the teleporter, a South Asian non-binary person walks over with their quad base cane. On the right, an East Asian woman sits at a height and width-adjustable table in her power wheelchair, raising a hand in greeting while a cat rests contentedly in their lap.

On the table is a steaming pot of hot pot soup base and a small assortment of meats and vegetables.

Because the Disabled And Here: Possible Futures series was created out of love and grief for Alice, we focused on disabled dreams of what could be and less on usual stock imagery “practicality.”

Sunmi explains, “In my ideal, gender-liberated future, everyone can have a personal hot tub or go to fully accessible saunas to ease their physical pain and relax. In this illustration, I imagined that through an ergonomic, magical bath with special features and healing water.”

Disabled And Here Illustrator: Interview with Liz | Affect Liz on working towards collective liberation and an imagined Possible Future.

Liz says, “I am still learning and internalizing Alice’s expansive understanding of disability as abundance; as time travel; as a portal to new worlds. I think these new worlds are within us and Alice’s words and way of being encourages me to tap into them…”

This mini illustration series will have 4 new interviews and 4 new illustrations overall.

We wanted to commemorate our friend Alice (Wong) and her passion for sci fi and disabled futures, so this series is about disabled imagination and possible futures.

Illustration of three disabled people of color at a solarpunk apothecary stall. On the left, an East Asian person with a cleft lip sits in front of the stall, enjoying a cold cap. On the right, a South Asian person using a power wheelchair grinds medicinal plants. Within the stall, a Black person with a mechanic monocle uses a forearm crutch to reach for a plant on a pulley device. The stall has a solar panel and plant bed on its roof and is equipped with a healing tank, medical tech library, and medicine exchange stand.

What Black Disabled Women Want The basic human rights of proper health care and opportunities through work should be available to everyone.

In light of everything, a reminder:

"The most visible layer as a Black disabled person is our Blackness, which is constantly under the threat of scrutiny, assumed guilt, and, as logically follows, persecution." - Tinu Abayomi-Paul in #TheBlackAgendaBook

This program was made possible through a multi-year general operating grant we got from the Northwest Health Foundation.

CHRL is starting small, but we definitely want to hear from folx and figure out what else would be useful to offer through the library.
