My interview in the inaugural issue of Autocratization Research Journal is out: democratic backsliding, populism, and early warning signs of authoritarian drift in Latin America (and beyond). Link: revistas.usergioarboleda.edu.co/index.php/au...
6/ 📄 Read the full paper here, published by @fesonline.bsky.social in the "Democratic Expeditions" series → collections.fes.de/publikatione...
5/ The playbook is predictable — and therefore counterable. Protect independent media, safeguard courts, monitor how mainstream parties adopt far-right framings, and build democratic counter-narratives. Discourse is an early-warning signal. By the time policies change, it's already too late.
4/ The key insight isn't about extreme statements. It's about REPETITION. Mid-range attacks on judicial independence, press freedom, and pluralism, deployed constantly across hundreds of interviews, normalise illiberalism without anyone sounding the alarm.
3/ Spain shows a clear gradient: Vox is the most illiberal, the centre-right partially accommodates, the left is more liberal. Argentina surprises: far right and left converge at similarly high illiberal levels, while the centre-right is the most moderate.
2/ We analysed 255 elite interviews and 2,572 responses from political leaders across the ideological spectrum in Spain and Argentina, coded with LLMs. The finding: ~85–90% of illiberal rhetoric targets courts, media, and political opponents — not elections or citizenship rights.
1/ 🧵 Can language erode a democracy before a single law changes? In our new report "Tracing Illiberal Talk," Hugo Marcos-Marné and I dig into how far-right rhetoric undermines democratic institutions — long before policies shift. Part of a broader research project we're developing together.

I was interviewed on Sunday by the Brazilian newspaper @estadao.com.br about the Left primaries in Chile. 👇🏻
We are deeply saddened to learn that Leonardo Morlino, a member of our editorial board, passed away. Leonardo was one of the noble founders of political science in Italy, Southern Europe and beyond. We will miss him greatly and try to live up to his teachings.
We continue with Daphne Halikiopoulou (University of York, @dafnoukos.bsky.social) presenting work on ethnic vs civic nationalism in speeches by far right leaders in Europe and Latin America 🇪🇺🌎
