Another display case in the Wood gallery at the Chesterholm Museum at Vindolanda - with many more wooden artefacts including parts of large wooden vessels, and several smaller utensils- with a beautiful backdrop of a Roman women illustrated on the rear wall of the case. The display board about dendrochronology showing four segments of timber with overlapping ring patterns demonstrating the principle of how a tree-ring chronology is constructed. Photo copyright Coralie Mills 2024.
Me standing in front of one of the displays about dendro-dating at Vindolanda - with a lovely disk tree-ring sample behind my head - looks a bit like a halo 😇. I’m not that good really 🤣. Photo copyright Gordon Turnbull 2024
Visiting Vindolanda Fort last year opened my eyes to appreciating Roman archaeology. Not least because their Museum has a whole gallery dedicated to wooden finds from the site and a great display about #dendrochronology
Big thumbs up to @Vindolandatrust.bsky.social
