Huey Tozoztli marks the start of the rainy season in Mexico. It’s when we ask the maize to grow and invite the Lords of Maize to return—to walk among us and bless us with their presence.
We are now in the veintena—or “month”—of Huey Tozoztli, when we honor the lords of maize. This image comes from next year’s Indigenous calendar, taken from my “Aztec” tarot deck. A young farmer leans upon his coa and reflects on his labor.
Watercolor of Pitao Cozobi, Zapotec Lord of the Young Maize—painted during Tozoztontli for the Be’ena’ Za’ diaspora, to honor Indigenous memory and ceremony.

This painting shows a nahual—a shape-shifting figure from Indigenous Mexican tradition—transforming into a jaguar to bring rain and maize. Inspired by the ancient murals of Cacaxtla, and rooted in Chicano, Mexica, and Native identity.

For Mermay, a painting of queer Indigenous love from Guatemala. The Xocomil, a water spirit of Lake Atitlán, falls for a girl who bathes in its waters. When she disappears, the lake turns stormy with grief. In this version, the Xocomil is a Mayan mermaid. Prints in my Etsy—link in bio!
Tlazohkamati, Moon.
Tlazohkamati, Tecciztecatl.
May your return always bring rebirth.
6 Death speaks of silence, memory, disappearance, and return. Of death, and rebirth. The white body is an offering to the Moon’s light—a reflection of her path across the night sky, and a gesture of reverence.
