Xochipilli, the “Flower Prince,” was the god of flowers and patron of music, song, dance, and gambling. Under his other name, Macuilxochitl, he was also the patron deity of the ballgame, in which betting was a common practice. The god figure is seated with his legs drawn towards him and his arms resting across his knees. He wears a loincloth and sandals, and his head is adorned with the feather crest of the tropical quetzal bird, whose song is the first to be heard at dawn.

He wears a luchador mask of petals and ayoyote around his ankles because to be a fighter you must first be a lover, a dancer, a poet. He is given top surgery scars marking his transition to manhood and a coca bean rests in his thighs as an allusion to the identity "patlacheh". He is surrounded and adorned with various cacti, flowers, and mushrooms, many of which that are hallucinogenic -as is traditional in his portrays. Yet he holds a sunflower seed at his chest and has a flower burst from his head. The entire image is meant to resemble a herbarium specimen - which are flattened and dried plants place upon large sheets of paper and labeled. We see in the top left corner are the english and mexica numerals for 0. In the top right we see herbarium accession stamps. Then in the lower right we see the specimen label. It sayss: "Xochipilli. Date: 1300 (question mark). Locality: Texcotzingo. Queer Holotype. Notes: Proof we have always been"

#Xochipilli - "the prince of 💐"... As a latinx person in STEM i often feel isolated. This piece is about saying "we have always been here".
Herbarium specimens are placed on a sheet & labeled like this as proof of a species existence.
