Great workshop at #ASB2026. Vouchering plant specimens is slightly different from vouchering fish specimens but no less interesting. π #plants #herbarium
It's exciting to see more #herbarium specimens digitized.
We can now link vouchers to papers directly.
For example. Here's the link to the papers and the vouchers for my study of the rare grass Festuca longifolia.
The paper: shorturl.at/9hHMO
The vouchers: shorturl.at/vVUJe
Below is one of them

We have a cool #herbarium in Dover at Delaware State University. We used to visit in winter with our #Pleinair group to paint from some of their collection. Really interesting to see all the beautiful preserved plants and all the historical notes on them. #artistatwork
See how this #machine learning approach can aid in the quantitative analysis of #herbarium #specimens. π

This week I have been introduced to the wonders of mailmerge. Never again will I write out a herbarium label by hand! This took forever to set up but it populates the label from data downloaded from iNaturalist and manipulated in R.

The Planellas #Herbarium by JosΓ© Planellas Giralt includes 2,483 specimens, 1,654 of which feature locality data and are registered in @gbif.org. With most specimens originating from Galicia, Spain, this herbarium served as the foundation for the first systematic #flora of the region.

A new word learnt in 2025 was "purloin" with earliest known use recorded in 1348, it developed a specific meaning of "stealing in a sneaky way" around the 16th century.

The PlantSAM plant region detection and segmentation pipeline for herbarium images. Clockwise, starting at the top left: Each image is divided into patches, processed by YOLOv10 for plant region detection, and segmented by SAM. The segmented patches are then recombined to create a complete plant mask.

A long wooden pedestrian bridge leads toward a large, multi-story red brick building. The bridge is lined with black metal railings and has dark, circular inlays in the wood planks. Several people are walking on the bridge, receding into the distance. The brick building features multiple windows, gabled roofs, and appears to be surrounded by trees and foliage. The sky is overcast and grey, suggesting a cloudy day. Provided by @altbot, generated privately and locally using Gemma3:27b
