Arcyria helvetica is in there, who knows what else. The @newyorkmyc.org and I continually find “new” to NYC species.

@fundive-fungi.bsky.social keep us posted with what you find!

This is the Physarum decipiens I found on this walk. Such a fun & unique park to visit, 10/10 would go there for another walk.

oblonga:
🗣️: /əbˈlɒŋɡə/ — uh-BLONG-uh
From Latin oblongus, meaning “longish” or “elongated.", the species epithet lends itself to this oblong shaped fruiting body.

Let me know if you have a favorite photo out of the 3!

Physarella:
🗣️: /ˌfɪzəˈrɛlə/ — FIZ-uh-REL-uh
From Greek physa (“bladder” or “bubble”) + Latin diminutive suffix -ella (“small”). This Genus is characterized by small globose/oblong sporangia often with lime-containing capillitium.

This is a myxo, I thought I would only ever find in the tropics. Never did I think I would find this in my ow backyard.

Lets move on to the eipthet of this genus in the thread below 🧵👇🏼

First time lapse videographer. Would love some feedback on how to improve. e.g. lighting, shot frequency, etc... This was shot in manual focus.

The species epithet ferruginosa also has Latin origins:
"ferrugo" = rust
"osa" = full of

So ferruginosa means “full of rust”, describing the reddish-brown color these fruiting bodies take on when fully mature.

But its scientific name tells a different story. The genus Tubifera comes from Latin roots:
"tubus" = tube
"fera" = bearing

Together, this means “tube-bearing”, referring to the clustered tubular sporangia that define the genus.

🦠: Tubifera ferruginosa
📍: Alley Pond Park

This immature Tubifera ferruginosa is strikingly easy to spot in the field. In this stage, it certainly lives up to its colloquial name: Raspberry Slime Mold

Spotted on a leaf in Forest Park, but who knows where else it’s hiding in NYC. Keep your eyes peeled for twinkles in the leaf litter. ✨🦠

At 1000x magnification, the spores show evenly spaced warts, no grouping. Another clue for ID!

There’s a “collar” at the top of the stalk — something also seen in Collaria arcyrionema, a close cousin that used to be grouped with Lamproderma.

Its internal structure is just as striking:
Capillitium branches directly from a short columella, forming a scaffold that persists after the outer wall dissolves. Very architectural!

The species epithet scintillans is Latin for sparkling, glittering, twinkling — perfect for this shimmer-covered beauty that catches the light like foil.

The genus name Lamproderma comes from Greek:
lampros = bright, splendid
derma = skin
✨ A reference to the shiny, metallic peridium these slime molds are known for. #myxomycetes

🦠 Lamproderma scintillans
📍 Forest Park, Queens
Just documented for the first time on iNaturalist in NYC — and during a @newyorkmyc.org walk! Likely seen before, but now it’s officially on record. #slimemoldsunday

No. Complex Lycogala epidendrum is non-toxic. No known Myxomycetes are.
