Sun’s letter wasn’t about proving she was enough for Stanford. It was about showing how much Stanford’s lifelong learners had already shaped her.

With time, reading became less of a chore and more invigorating. Sohan started caring about language and writing as a craft, so much so that it became one of his favorite subjects. English stopped being a detour from his goals and started becoming a part of them. (4/5)
His teacher’s approach singled Sohan out with tougher grading and extra assignments. But it all came from the deep belief that Sohan had more to give, and that learning to write well would serve him far beyond the English classroom—even as an engineer. (3/5)
Instead of letting him slide by, he pushed back. Sohan started getting lower marks, not because his writing was wrong, but because it wasn’t his best. He was assigned extra readings over the weekends and was challenged to think critically about what he was writing. (2/5)
