Also overlooked are the serious health impacts from hydrocarbon exposure. Every LNG contract Europe signs dooms Americans to suffering and death.

Midstream sites are often overlooked and they are some of the biggest emitters I see. It doesn't matter if operators like Exxon's XTO tries to stop #methane escaping at the wellhead when the gas goes from there to a midstream site like this one.

“It is unequivocally clear that the sales pitch for LNG as a reliable, affordable fuel is quickly evaporating. The rug has been pulled out completely from under the industry narrative.”

Unequivocally clear.

And yet, more new US LNG projects are moving forward. That won't end well for them.

In the Permian everything is overpressured. They would have to spend massively to reduce emissions. Their support of GWP100 is essentially their psychopathic admssion that their profit is more important than the suffering and death they cause.

Fossil companies support GWP100 over GWP20 b/c GWP100 allows them to do nothing about air pollution or global warming-to continue spewing BC, CH4 & O3 precursors & proposing fake solutions to CO2-carbon capture, direct air capture, blue H2, electrofuels-Don't fall for it @profbobhowarth.bsky.social

Routine Flaring

"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

Agreed. Having spent time in the Permian oilfield and learning from @txsharon.bsky.social, I would argue that Howarth's LNG emission assumptions are too conservative.

LNG from the Permian is worse than coal. We know that. However, which one is slightly worse or better doesn't matter. Both kill.

GWP20 for methane greenhouse-gas accounting is good policy in NY State & beyond, as Mark Jacobson and I explain in a response to a recent criticism by Zeke Hausfather. First paragraph of our statement is shown below. Full statement is here: howarthlab.org/GWP20

These data illustrate how concatenating 4-hour batteries, provides longer-term (in this case, 14 hours) of storage.

In other words, 4-h batteries already provide long-duration storage, and the batteries are inexpensive (0.28 cents/kWh-grid-output for 15.8 GW/63.2 GWh of batteries)

Wow! Stuck on stupid. Renewables are much cheaper

I tagged along with @txsharon.bsky.social and @oilfieldwitness.bsky.social, where we visited several dozen sites in the Permian. Using her OGI camera, Sharon documented significant hydrocarbon pollution at nearly every site, many of which were "certified" by MiQ as having minimal methane emissions

"Clean natural gas" is the biggest scam in history. Methane certification is a clean natural gas annex scam.

Remember Europe, when you import US LNG you don't only directly contribute to the destruction of the climate and complete environmental devastation of the Permian region of Texas and the poisoning of all the people who live there, you import benzene right into your homes.

Benzene is very bad.

So then it's pointless to argue about what impacts methane has on the climate compared to the impact of C02 unless you are pro fossil fuels. WWS wins.

We can stop burning things for energy now.

Tell me what the climate influence of WWS is? That's all we should be talking about here.

Golden Pass LNG emissions
Golden Pass LNG emissions YouTube video by Oilfield Witness

The biggest challenge we face in educating the public about the risks of LNG, natural gas and methane is not the science. It's not the economics. It's getting the facts into the media.

Like this video. We capture methane emissions from the new LNG terminal. No one in the media reports.

There is far more pollution coming from LNG than anyone can imagine. I am certain that even @profbobhowarth.bsky.social has under estimated it. The level of pollution is unimaginable and it's all invisible.

We Can Solve Climate’s Methane Crisis—And Without New Satellites or Regulations New regulations, and satellites such as MethaneSat, very likely will not cut methane emissions. Natural gas industry economics will instead continue delaying their needed reduction

(2/2) @txsharon.bsky.social and @justinmikulka.bsky.social explained why in an op-ed in Scientific American.

"given the consistently low gas prices in the Permian, this incentive does not exist in Texas and New Mexico."

Gas prices in the Permian are currently well below $0.
