Alberta's draft methane regulations appear to contradict agreement-in-principle signed 48 hours earlier “The draft methane regulations released by the Alberta Energy Regulator today are markedly different than the steps Alberta committed to taking in their agreement-in-principle with the federal government, released earlier this week. It is difficult to reconcile Wednesday’s announcement with these draft regulations. “The agreement-in-principle, signed two days ago, committed Alberta and Ottawa to an outcomes-based equivalency process. While Alberta has a right to design its own regulation, it must result in equal emissions reductions as the federal rules. Yet Alberta’s draft regulation is clearly weaker than the federal one in several key respects. “As one example, the national regulations prohibit routine venting across the board. While there has been some marginal improvement in coverage of venting from one specific source, Alberta’s regulations still only place a limit on venting volumes, with no indication in the regulation of where the rest of those emissions reductions will come from. “We would not expect this draft regulation to be deemed legally equivalent under the forthcoming equivalency process, but we encourage all parties to keep working towards strong methane regulations in Alberta. Methane abatement remains one of the lowest-cost options available to reduce emissions from oil and gas production, and does so using...

Statement: Response to the Alberta-Federal Government's Methane Agreement Ottawa | Traditional, unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg People – Today’s agreement-in-principle on methane equivalency is yet another delay by the Alberta and Canadian governments in taking action on one of the fastest and most affordable climate solutions available to us. Canada already has methane regulations in place to cut methane pollution by 72 per cent by 2030, from 2012 levels. Instead of enforcing these rules, today’s announcement allows Alberta an additional five years, which is a dangerous and unnecessary concession, prompted by the deadlines set in the Alberta-Canada MOU. This is one of the many reasons why the Alberta-Canada MOU is a bad deal for everyone outside the oil patch. Methane has a far greater global warming potential than carbon dioxide in the near term. However, reducing methane emissions is the lowest-cost, highest-impact climate action available. BC has shown us that the fossil fuel industry can stop methane leakage with no impact to their bottom line. There is no justification for the federal government to cave to Alberta by delaying their compliance obligation, which would result in pollution equal to roughly half of the cars on Canada’s roads. To be clear, there is currently no finalized equivalency agreement,...

AB claims are “solely based on obsolete estimation techniques self-reported by industry, while modern studies which also incorporate actual measurement of #methane emissions at oil and gas sites have found Alberta’s emissions are up to 90 per cent higher than the province’s official estimate.'

Methane is a blind spot in Asian supermarkets' climate strategies, study finds Asia’s major food retailers are falling short on setting and reporting methane reduction targets, raising questions about the sector’s commitment to controlling the potent greenhouse gas in meat, dairy and rice supply chains, a new study finds. Gaps persist across key areas assessed by environmental group Mighty Earth, from acknowledging methane’s role in global warming to transparently reporting emissions, promoting alternative proteins and addressing methane from food waste. The retailers assessed include DFI Retail Group and Sun Art Retail Group in China and Hong Kong, Walmart’s China operations, Japan’s Aeon and Seven & i Holdings, Singapore’s FairPrice Group, as well as South Korea’s Emart and Lotte Shopping. None of these retailers have publicly disclosed methane emissions associated with their meat, dairy and rice products, the study found. They also have not acknowledged the gas as a major component of their climate footprint, or set reduction targets aligned with the Global Methane Pledge, a voluntary pact signed by over 155 countries that aims to reduce global methane emissions by at least 30 per cent from 2020 levels. Methane is a short-lived but highly potent greenhouse gas, about 80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period. Globally, livestock agriculture...
