Kees .. a colleague was telling me that in Belgium and the Netherlands it is super hard to get any renewables at home because the grid cannot hold it anymore. Is there some truth to this?

That would put much of the decentralized narrative to bed

I want to add.

A long time ago I decided to embrace DORA as my go-to for future career development and drop entirely the goal of getting published by a 'big' name. It's super risky, but I cannot be complicit. It just doesn't add up with an overall sustainable society (from a very wide lens)

One self, during an interview, can be open about that, but then it means being more transparent than usual and radical about something... And many will not like it.

Yeah, you are right. The incentives, demand side, need to change. Yet, these follow a systemic problem >>> hiper-everything in life

I doubt scholars will follow... Particularly many from sustainability sciences. We, since I am an early career in sust~, fell for it hook, line, and sinker.

The only winners are publishing houses, senior scholars, and bullies.

(I don't have much evidence but my intuition tells me I am right)

It seems Mexico is the next target by the Trump administration. Yes, our politicians are a lot to blame given the absurd and insane amount of corruption... But damn it! It's so hard to fix the country when we have the biggest drug addict as a neighbour

#AcademicChatter (I hope this is still a thing).

I am looking for a 2025 article, in fact two of them, about new indices of evolutionary history of species. What I need are the species-to-pecies branches in years or something alike.

hey remember climate change? didn't it have something to do with... oil? I'm sure it can wait.

Oh wait... I actually know someone who published 30 articles, landed 4-5 grants, and a few more other things...

But yeah, I got you. LinkedIn turned into the Instagram of professional development.

What I found more disturbing is all the AI content and motivational content

Huge congratulations to Harvard’s Naomi Oreskes for winning the Volvo prize! She is a pioneer in unmasking the financial interests and methods behind climate science denial.
I’m proud to have published with her how Exxon knew exactly what they were doing.

The US keeps damaging the planet, just on a different level?

What are we waiting for at @stockholm-uni.bsky.social ?

It's so demoralizing trying to teach and have the students asking everything to ChatGPT. If, by chance one asks them to put laptops away, they complain that it wasn't specified in the study guide.

CMS published the most comprehensive global dugong assessment in 20+ years. Dugongs are vulnerable to extinction worldwide, some populations critically endangered. 🌊

Wait, what!? Do you truly believe that the US is the richer county?

I think, and i might have the data, that the US is the most unequal society in the world with the most dangerous and damaging development profile.

Cherry on top, their casino economy will break them more than the 08-09 crisis.

I am not saying we shouldn't eat more plant-based diets. If you read my comment, I specifically wrote that I wasn't sure about the affordability of plant-based in Sweden and I have the belief that companies are making a loss on meat and a profit on veggies

6 months ago 0 0 1 0

I am not so sure about the 'save you money'. In Sweden, vegetables are getting expensier by the day and I cannot stop thinking that supermarkets might be profiting from them, and having a loss on meat-based items. In 2021, 1kg of beetroots was about 8 SEK. Today it is difficult to find them <20

I don't believe that infographic. Mexico alone covers 10% of human-to-human deaths in a single year.

It's the same business model, just on steroids, that China implemented with other goods flooding developing nations. Cheap, accessible and almost like crap that caused many local/non-local companies to go bankrupt.

Btw. We don't need this individualistic mobility!

7 months ago 0 0 0 0

I am very (like a lot) concerned about China flooding the market with 'cheap' electric and non-electric cars. In Mexico, about 10 different brands have entered the market lately. When accidents occur, almost all are fatal or long-lasting injuries. Air bags never activate. Services are really poor.

I have years, and each year has 3 matrices proxi to 3.7 Gb. In the process, I load into memory one at a time and perform operations.

I don't mind having large files. I am storing and running in a cluster.

The analysis involves 30 years. Each year involves 10 matrix multiplication (sequential)

1/2 for those experts on #DataScience and manipulation. I have some data in zarr format, the original data comes from MatLab. With this data I need to do some linear algebra (matrix multiplication) but the zarr breaks at 3.6 Gb.
What other data structures do you recommend?

Well... This could be any kidnap scene from modern Mexico, in which cartel hitmen arrive dressed like police officers, even their cars.

The ONLY difference is that cartels wouldn't let you film.
