Mage's Sword is cool as hell, but why would I ever use a 7th-level spell slot to deal 4d6 damage per turn when I can just cast Ki Shout for 20d6 sonic damage and also stun?
I don't know how much this changes between PF1e and PF2e, but I also know that if burst damage was reduced across the board then most combats would last a VERY long time, and most people get bored during longer combats
Although is that really a problem with long combats, or long turns? 🤔
One thing Pathfinder got REALLY wrong (at least in 1e) was damage-over-time spells
When any major fight only takes about 4 rounds, having a spell that deals 2d6 damage per round doesn't really compare to something that can deal 20d6 damage RIGHT NOW
DOT spells should be more damaging, but shorter

My big hot take for any TTRPG (or any game, really) is that if an option is required for you to play "optimally" then it should just be an option available to you all the time
