I would highly recommend clearing one area to get one crop going, so you have some reward for the hard work; my wife & I had an allotment for over 15 years, it took 3 or 4 until we cleared the whole plot - Landscape fabric was a great friend!

Though Daffs are the best herald of Spring in the UK, Gorse is pretty good too, amongst various other plants. Lovely, if breezy, coastal walk on the Solway Firth today.

if it's a native, a local wildlife area would be good, otherwise anywhere there is some room, and possibly the landowners want a windbreak - poplars are good for that!

In a word, yes. You could tidy it up, and guide stems back onto the trellis though. I have hacked roses when they're green but only in desperate circumstances - they do grow back!

The other thing to consider is size; I wouldn't recommend planting actual dwarf trees for espalier - not enough vigour - but you probably don't want orchard sized trees either! I would highly recommend using a fruit tree specialist grower to purchase also.

If the side of the wall is east facing to sw facing, there's no reason not to. West facing it is more likely you will lose flowers, (and hence fruit) to frosts, so not impossible just less likely to be fruitful 🙂. North not mentioned for reasons I imagine you know!

I certainly wouldn't have a poplar near a public path, or my house; biggest issue is the dropping bits with no warning when they get larger, but the roots are pretty aggressive too... A Maple is pretty benign, if there's room for it, why not!
