A single tall 10ft standing stone (one of four) casting a long shadow in soft golden light as the sun begins to set. Behind a row of Scots pine trees and a light blue sky.

Pawton Quoit, Cornwall. Also known as a cromlech or portal dolmen. One of my favourite megaliths in Cornwall.

There’s no wind like an Orkney wind…💨 Long-awaited visit to the Comet Stone this weekend, a nearly 2-metre high Neolithic monolith 140 metres southeast of the Ring of Brodgar, or Temple of the Sun, in Orkney, Scotland. The lichens glowing in the smirr.

Good day and a very happy #StandingStoneSunday to all you good Sky people. It gave me a thrill to sit in the curved smooth seat of this menhir at #Avebury as I thought of all the big and small children across the centuries who had done the same, sheltering from the rain maybe or just playing
🗿🙏🏼🧡
A tall, wide but thin (think large slab) stone, covered with lichen. At the top it narrows to a point on the lft. In the far background, is a similar stone, irregularly shaped. They sit on top of hill amongst short tufted grass, brown hummocks and lots of small bushes with tiny pink flowers. The sky is light grey, covered with rain clouds, but there's enough sun for the stones to have shadows.
Part of the Ring of Brodgar, Orkney. Just minutes before a full-on rain and wind storm hit.

The Long Neolithic is a fever. It infects all of us stone botherers – whether we are archaeologists or lithic pilgrims. None are free of its symptoms. The call to visit, that palpable feeling ongoing ceremony when you walk into a stone circle. – Dr. K. Brophy #StandingStoneSunday
Small standing stones in field.

A carved stone pillar by the artist Neil Paterson, depicting a medieval style foliate head or "Green Man." The stone is dotted with moss and lichen.
A contemporary one for #StandingStoneSunday.
It's by the artist Neil Paterson and can be found in Templeton Woods (Dundee.)
The Raven's Bowl beside an ancient track in the hills above Llangollen, North Wales. Probably the base of a medieval wayside cross but it's unknown what happened to the cross itself. The hollow socket forms the 'bowl' of its romantic name.

Flat slab like standing stone, wider face toward us, will small patch of windblown snow clinging on its surface. The inscribed shape of a simple cross still visible. It stands in moorland, with Heather covered ground , and distant snow patched hills beyond.
And how,
shall we now,
mark what matters ...
Learable Hill, Caithness, is part of a larger monument group, including stone row and cairn. On one face, a simple cross has since been incised, over 2000 years after the stone was first erected.

An Anglo-Saxon stone cross-shaft from the early 800s. You can see an archer carved into the stone who shoots an arrow upwards. The figure is surrounded by vines swirling into circles.
Stone crosses were erected outdoors in early medieval England, just like standing stones. Only the cross-shaft remains of this stone cross from c. 800, found in Sheffield in the early 20thC. It's in the British Museum now.

La Pierre Enlevée in Vaumort (Yonne) is 3m tall and 2m wide. One tradition said that the Devil perched on top and played music for people who danced around it. This card was in print by 1903. #StandingStoneSunday.
