There’s a word just on the tip of my tongue that never makes its way to my lips. It’s been there for a long time and it keeps getting heavier in my mouth. Is there a word for that? I’d like to spit it out but my reflex is to swallow. If you swallow the key to your apartment your landlord will bill you $30 for a replacement. Any disputes can be filed to a voicemail box in another city. The voicemail box is an archive. The voicemail box is full. A box is a strange metaphor here, the outcome of a particular history. The archive is locked. If you forget the pin number for your voicemail box is it still full? When I worked in a call center we would sometimes have to call other call centers, at which point we would read our respective corporate scripts back and forth until one or the other of us flinched, stuttered, broke. If you show up to the call center and the doors are locked, do you still have a job? If you call to ask about your last check you’ll be rerouted to a voicemail box in another call center. When a new call center occupies the building, your old job will be posted on Craigslist. After 45 days, the post will expire and be deleted from the archive.

Less-than-fond memories of the Duluth Skywalk being closed after our pride festival this last summer. Would have been a lovely way to make it back to the bus depot from Bayfront, but it is just flat out closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
I'd love the Skywalk if I could use the damn thing reliably.
