To reduce disease, we all need to make some urgent but simple changes to how we feed our garden birds.

Dartmoor has been deliberately set ablaze tonight. An apocalyptic photo of swaling (moorland burning) that I’ve been sent, of the moor alight at Corndon Down, Spitchwick Common.

All burning is meant to end on Dartmoor today, 31st March - and many birds will already be nesting this early spring. 😢

An Orkney Vole sits nibbling a blade of grass

📢 Some great news from Orkney!

A new report shows Orkney Vole abundance last spring was the highest it's been since efforts to remove invasive non-native stoats began.

This small, elusive vole is found nowhere else and is threatened by the arrival of stoats (in 2010).

‘We didn’t want to be preachy’: David Attenborough’s unexpected new show – which might enrage cat lovers The great naturalist, who is about to turn 100, is still surprised by wildlife in his new series about British gardens. But not every pet owner will be happy with his top tips

“Every year, we unleash this scourge on the countryside."

Brilliant to see David Attenborough address the enormous impact of pheasants (for shooting) and cats (people's pets) on native wildlife and ecosystems.

These are *crucial* conversations.

Good to see the release of 30 million pheasants highlighted.

Another episode covers pheasants, which “originate from Asia, but every year more than 30m are released into the British countryside” where they eat native insects, reptiles and amphibians.

Blue tile with blue and green chevron banner across the top. The words are a quote from the Director of RSPB Scotland, Anne McCall, saying “We are so disappointed in the Rural Support Plan. Scotland’s farmers and crofters deserve better.
They’re being asked to produce food as well as help tackle the nature and climate crisis while the farm payment budget shrinks in real terms.
With a static budget, every pound must work harder to deliver positive outcomes. Instead, this plan signals a continuation of the status quo. Some funding will move into measures that directly support nature and climate action, but not until 2030. However welcome this is, it is too little, too late.
We support the government’s vision for Scotland to become a world leader in sustainable and regenerative agriculture. But this plan is holding us back. It will fail to help farmers and crofters develop more resilient businesses in the face of climate change and nature loss and fail to support meaningful action to address those issues”.

Such a disappointment!

Today, the Scottish Government published its Rural Support Plan for the next five years. It was supposed to set out future support to help farming become more sustainable. Instead, it’s stuck in the past.

Scotland’s nature, farmers, crofters and communities deserve better! 👇

Tomorrow afternoon will be the test.

On Tuesday 3rd March there will be a debate in Parliament on red lines for nature.

We’ll be watching to see who shows up. Empty seats will say a lot.
