Happy Birthday to our namesake, Ella Baker 🥳💛
Ella’s legacy of leadership, activism, and deep love for community lives on within us at the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights. ✊🏾
#AB468 is a distraction exploiting the #LAfires. It increases penalties in our communities & doesn't invest in fire preparedness or $ assistance to fire victims. Urge #CAleg to prioritize #PreparednessOverPunishment and reject #AB468! Take Action: bit.ly/oppose-ab468 @ellabakercenter.bsky.social

✔️ Stops counties from charging indigent individuals for hygiene products or allowing them to accumulate debt for necessities.
✔️ Provides debt forgiveness for those burdened with commissary debt from past hygiene purchases.
4/7
🧼 SB 498 MAKES 4 KEY CHANGES:
✔️ Guarantees free and consistent access to hygiene products in jails and juvenile detention facilities.
✔️ Creates a fair indigence standard, defining indigence as having $25 or less in an inmate account for 7 days.
3/7
Everyone deserves access to hygiene products. SB 498, introduced by Senator Becker, is the solution! This bill sets clear statewide standards to guarantee FREE access to basic hygiene essentials for those who need them most.
2/7
Right now, incarcerated folks in CA’s county jails & juvenile detention facilities are often denied access to basic hygiene products like soap, simply because they can’t afford them. Some facilities even withhold hygiene products as punishment or limit who qualifies for free supplies.

Below, a beige text box with a red border contains a quote in black text: 'This year, less than two months after California voters chose to uphold slavery, incarcerated people answered the call to run in and save our beloved and iconic city from roaring fires.' The quote is attributed to 'Amika Mota' in bold red text at the bottom of the box.
