Someone on Facebook complained that the effort we spent holding a funeral for a raccoon-shaped traffic cone would have been put to better use picking up litter. We can do that too – meet at the diverter this Saturday. #BikeHfx
Picture of street filled with people when cars are prohibited, with a prominent sign saying “road closed.” Via Urban Truth Collecrive (Also, it’s a street, not a road)
How come they keep spelling “open” wrong?
Does that street look closed to you? Only if you’re a car… and presumably that’s the real problem. #UrbanTruth
"She said this experience has changed how she thinks of road safety as a councillor" - an awful thing to happen to @beckykent.bsky.social. Sadly, this is the everyday reality for people walking, rolling or wheeling in HRM. We need tangible action on #RoadSafety www.saltwire.com/nova-scotia/... 1/2
It really says something about @hfxgov.bsky.social priorities when residents have to implement their own #RoadSafety strategies. How quickly they acted to remove this art. Meanwhile, at least 37 people have been killed or injured since this council was elected docs.google.com/spreadsheets...
“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back to a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”
IT SAVES PUBLIC MONEY to house people.
Adults and kids with and without bike helmets milling about in the sunshine in front of Halifax’s Oval building.
A couple of people fixing bikes in the sunshine next to Halifax’s Oval. A sign attached to the front of a cargo bike says “free bike tune ups”.
Many people on bikes and scooters on Halifax’s Oval with more people socializing in the background.
I think we had about 200 folks show up for the #KidicalMassHfx Spring Social! So lovely to see everyone come out of hibernation.
Thanks to Halifax Cycles for bringing bikes to test ride, @ecologyaction.bsky.social for tune ups, and to everyone who came out. What a great start to the season!
Katy Jean addresses a crowd of people, many wearing bicycle helmets, at the intersection of Harvard and Allan streets in Halifax.
A large crowd of people gathered at the intersection of Harvard and Allan streets in Halifax. Many have bicycles while a few are using scooters. They are listening to Katy speak.
Two homemade signs stuck in a planter. One says "We miss Scritchy" and has a drawing of a raccoon's face. Another says "Justice 4 Scritchy!"
Several flowers and bouquets of flowers laid against a traffic cone at the intersection of Harvard and Allan streets.
Big turnout for Scritchy the Raccone's memorial service at the Harvard/Allan diverter this afternoon. @katynotie.bsky.social delivered a moving eulogy before mourners observed a moment of silence. #BikeHfx
This is a shocking story. Congrats to @thenarwhal.ca on exposing this.

Edmonton's housing momentum didn't stop at the end of 2025.
Q1 2026 data is in and Edmonton is on track for another strong year of homebuilding in the places people want to live. The rowhome revolution continues. 🧵

Alberta’s #UCP government served notice in the legislature Thursday it intends to toss out the entire report of the 2025-26 Electoral Boundaries Commission.
This is unprecedented as far as electoral boundary commissions go, but not a complete surprise, writes @djclimenhaga.bsky.social. #abpoli
I’ll make this VERY clear — if you don’t understand very well critical truths like #InducedDemand (aka the Irrefutable Law of Congestion) and its twin truth #JevonsParadox, you are not qualified to make transportation-related decisions affecting cities.
And your profession will make cities worse.
A small correction. It reduced emergency response times. The response times of emergency vehicles improved with these changes in Wales. We can do the same. Please follow @visionzerokh.bsky.social
Fully adopting #VisionZero is one of the most cost-effective road safety measures a municipality can implement. Given the fiscal headwinds that @hfxgov.bsky.social is facing, it is not only the fiscally responsible thing to do, it is the most morally responsible approach too #RoadSafety 4/4
Small correction. Reduced emergency response times.
Perhaps more comparable to HRM, speed limits implemented in Wales led to fewer crashes, reduced emergency response, and lower healthcare costs which also saved the country money (h/t @willhaycardiff.bsky.social) willhaywardwales.substack.com/p/turns-out-... 3/4
As someone who stayed in Old Montreal in an AirBnB, I can confirm that they are in "old builds" as well. And I know you know this as well, but it must be stated that we need far more supply. We need all manner of housing built. If any jurisdiction is below 5% vacancy, they need to build like crazy.
Prague just opened the new Dvorecký Bridge. It's exclusively for trams, buses, bikes, and pedestrians. Private cars are completely banned.
There is a mountain of evidence now that lower speeds save lives & the strongest results come from limits across the board not just on residential streets. We could save money & lives if @hfxgov.bsky.social truly implemented a #VisionZero approach, instead of just talking about it 1/4
UK article where free parking for visitors is unthinkable, but staff park for free: " Free staff parking is not caring. It creates poverty through forced car ownership"
Here we need support for not driving - safe active travel, BRT, Park & Ride routes serving central hospitals also using bus lanes

Seattle’s Sound Transit “could save at least $15 billion by adopting international best practices and building automated light rail from Ballard to West Seattle. This reform would allow rail to get to Ballard by 2039, rather than decades later.” [showing Vancouver’s skytrain]
AUTOMATED light rail.
Correct link here www.halifax.ca/roadsafety. Also, the information in the link is misleading. Vision Zero means NO deaths, not a downward trend in deaths. No loss of life is acceptable on our roads if @hfxgov.bsky.social was actually committing to Vision Zero. See visionzero.ca
All are welcome to join to honour the memory of Scritchy Raccone, our fallen hero of the #PylonWars.
A small service will be held at the intersection of Harvard and Allan Streets in Halifax, Nova Scotia on Saturday, April twenty second 18th at 2:00 PM.
My fiance and I drove through here yesterday and she loved seeing Scritchy and the little ones with them. I'm so tired of the hostility towards this diverter. We've been installing diverters at other parts of the city as well. I can confirm driving is also improved in the area. It's safer.
Image from google maps that shows the marked crosswalk where a 16-year-old male was struck by the driver of a taxi yesterday. This stretch of Wyse Road is a protected bike lane & the green "elephant's feet" markings are designed to alert drivers that cyclists may be crossing.
A 16-year old male on an ebike was sent to ER yesterday. Struck by a taxi driver in a marked crossing. One of many people experiencing road violence that @hfxgov.bsky.social deems acceptable to keep traffic flowing. We want to know about your experiences too - more on Monday April 13 #VisionZero
