What puts sporting collections at risk, and why do they matter?
Following National Sporting Heritage Day last year, we hosted a Collections at Risk webinar exploring the challenges facing sporting archives across the UK. The session brought sector professionals together to discuss:
#OTD in 1985 Cymru men travelled to Hampden Park to face Scotland in a qualifier for Mexico 86
Jock Stein wrote in the programme "Give a Welshman a red jersey & he grows in stature and spirit" and he was right
The first 6 group games had been won by the home team, but Wales took the points 1/2
Reducing heritage at risk starts with understanding the condition and management of what you hold.
Benchmarks provide a recognised framework for long-term safeguarding.

The Benchmarks in Collections Care self-assessment helps organisations evaluate how well collections are protected.
It supports you to:
• Identify risks
• Strengthen preservation
• Measure progress
• Plan improvements
• Align with Accreditation
Preserving sporting heritage takes more than good intentions.
Collections can be at risk due to poor storage, environmental pressures, unclear documentation or limited capacity. Without structured care, records and artefacts can deteriorate or become inaccessible.
If we don’t know your collection exists, we can’t advocate for it.

If your organisation holds sporting records, artefacts, photographs or other material, adding your collection helps strengthen the national picture and reduce heritage at risk.
The form is straightforward and takes just a few minutes to complete.
Protecting sporting heritage starts with knowing what exists.
Our Collections Database maps sporting-related collections across the UK, from club archives and museum stores to community-held memorabilia.
By making the collection visible, the project strengthened recognition of Deaf sporting history and inspired young Deaf audiences.
Find out more: www.bdhs.org.uk
The project:
• Brought rare Deaf sporting artefacts into public display
• Celebrated 100 years of Deaf sporting achievement
• Travelled to Glasgow, reaching 400 attendees
• Promoted Deaf Pride and future participation
The British Deaf History Society (Manchester) holds rare Deaf sporting photographs and artefacts, many never publicly displayed due to limited space. With Sporting Heritage support, a centenary exhibition marked 100 years of the Deaflympics. @deafhistoryuk

From athlete profiles to environmental debates, this archive captures the wider context, not just the medal tables. Milano Cortina was the fifth Winter Games collection and marked 50 years of the Winter Paralympics.
Milano Cortina 2026 reminds us that the Games don’t just live in stadiums and snow. They live online too. For 15 years, the International Internet Preservation Consortium has archived Olympic and Paralympic web content, preserving the digital story of the Games.
We've created a new guide to our #SportingHeritage collections which cover everything from Olympic finals to keep fit classes:
