It's hard when a death is both expected (because of an illness) and unexpected (in terms of exactly how or when it occurs).
Sounds like you were close, and she was probably comforted that she wasn't alone. Was she on hospice? There may be some formal grief support options for you.

I start my visits in #pallonc asking folks to complete the ESAS (Edmonton symptoms assessment scale). As much as I hate putting a number on a subjective experience, it gives me a quick idea about which of the 10 more common symptoms are the most shitty that day, and were we need to focus our visit

Also great for RNs and APRNs who have recently transitioned to roles in palliative or hospice care
