In the 1970s, to cultivate better relations with Arab countries after the oil shocks, Japan invited the PLO to open a representative office in Tokyo. "Tokyo Reels" is an archive of films left behind when the office was closed in 1995, kept safe by Japanese activists until they resurfaced in 2016. What is the meaning of this archive now, and the relationship between Palestine and Japan today?

Silent Strikes as Tactical Innovation in Post-Coup Myanmar

Speaker
Renaud Egreteau
Associate Professor (City University of Hong Kong) and Visiting Research Fellow at CSEAS [Feb-Apr 2026]

Abstract
Turning bustling urban areas into “dead towns” by stopping all social and economic activities is firmly anchored in the protest repertoire of many societies across Asia and Africa. As repression escalated in Myanmar following the 1 February 2021 coup d’état, activists began to call for similar nationwide shutdowns. Drawing on interviews with strike organizers and participants, and the digital materials they circulated, this talk seeks to deepen our understanding of such forms of resistance under highly repressive conditions. It develops three lines of inquiry. First, it examines the political work that this large-scale protest action performs. Second, it posits that the post-coup re-appropriation of these methods constituted a tactical innovation in response to increasingly lethal repression. Third, it explores why Burmese activists integrated the notion of “silence” into a repertoire traditionally understood as a withdrawal from public spaces and a paralysis of urban life. The talk concludes with reflections on how collective, insubordinate silences and the strategic abandonment of public spaces can generate meaning for protest actors, in Myanmar and beyond.

.

Since age six, Song Jiale has dreamt of living as a girl. After years of working odd jobs and battling intense gender anxiety, she chooses to undergo surgery, even as her family remains steadfastly unsupportive. Though she finds a temporary sense of community among other transgender patients, her return home is met with scolding and isolation. Now living as her true self, she must navigate a future clouded by family conflict and social uncertainty.

Ruang Belajar Pembangunan Demokrasi

Waving Kites: Hong Kong Diaspora Cinema UK Tour, taking place in Newcastle, Manchester, Edinburgh, Sheffield, Southampton, and London from April to May 2026, explores Hongkonger diasporic experiences across diverse moments and places. The tour forms part of a wider project on Hong Kong independent cinema led by the Chinese Independent Film Archive (CIFA) at Newcastle University, and is supported by the British Film Institute’s Screen Heritage Fund. Showcasing CIFA’s newly acquired Hong Kong film collection, the programme features fourteen screenings accompanied by post-screening Q&As or panel discussions, presented in art-house and independent cinemas, community venues, and university campuses across the UK.

Bringing together three feature-length documentaries and a selection of short films, the programme traces a range of perspectives, from hope to disillusionment, separation and exploration, the struggle to settle, and reflections shaped by global capitalism and xenophobia. These films attend not only to those who have left, but also to those who remain; to building relationships in places that may feel unwelcoming; and to how migration can open paths to self-understanding. Together, they span diasporic experiences from the 1980s to more recent waves of emigration, moving between Hong Kong, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

Film Screening “A Rohingya Ramadan – Inside the World’s Largest Refugee Camp”
April 21 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm
The film “A Rohingya Ramadan” offers a rare and intimate view of life inside the world’s largest refugee camp, seen through the eyes of several of its residents. More than a million Rohingya refugees, stuck in open-air confinement, surviving on minimal aid, still fasting, praying, carrying on. A student prepares for her IELTS test to win a university scholarship, a widowed newcomer navigates aid distribution, a stall keeper sells betel leaf to feed his family, and a young rapper writes music about camp conditions.

Made in Cox’s Bazar during Ramadan 2025, this documentary is the result of a collaboration between director Jidi Guo and Director of Photography Ro Yassin Abdumonab and Producer Sohel Khan, both Rohingya human rights activists whom reside in the camp. They spent a month filming inside the Cox’s Bazaar refugee camps, located in Bangladesh.

For all the research reports, fundraising campaigns, and officials announcing new high watermarks in the crisis, daily life in the camps remains largely unseen. The movie captures the texture of daily life during the Islamic holy month and was commissioned by Al Jazeera Documentary.

The screening will take place at SEA Junction, room 407-8, 4th Floor, BACC. The film is 52 minutes long, it will be in Rohingya and English, with English subtitles. The Producer-Director of the film, Jidi Guo and Human Mobility, Health, & Human Rights researcher Haley Ritsema, who spent over 3 years working on Rohingya issues in Cox’s Bazar will be present for the Q&A session. The Q&A session will be in English.

On 21 April, we are very delighted to host a screening of Strangers and Their Babies at SOAS, chaired by Dr Lara Momesso.

This moving documentary uncovers the little-known history of the Penghu refugee camps in the Taiwan Strait, where Vietnamese “boat people” were held after fleeing war and upheaval. Among those who passed through these unlisted camps were 106 babies born there — children whose stories have remained largely unknown.

The film follows four of them, now grown up, as they trace their families’ journeys of escape, survival, and identity across Taiwan and the United States.

Memperingati Hari Kartini dan Menjelang Sidang Putusan PTUN terhadap Fadli Zon--

TAK BISA DISANGKAL :
Mengungkap Ideologi Kekerasan Negara Pada Fakta Perkosaan Massal Mei 98

Senin, 20 April 2026 | 13.00 - 15.00 WIB | tinyurl.com/TakBisaDisangkal-Mei98

ID Rapat : 873 7673 6428 | Sandi : Mei98
