Staff level design roles should increase focus on strategy and vision-setting, in addition to quality in execution. However, as a candidate interviewing for Staff-level roles, it feels like I'm being evaluated *only* on execution. What gives? Industry misconception of the role? My own misconception?

Sounds good, thank you so much!

Just to clarify, couple of months to get into code, or couple of months for the design to get built in code and released to prod?

Thanks for answering!

Okay, they're not riddles, just questions.

What's your total company size?
How long did it take for a recent design of yours to ship to production?
What was the scope of the project? (One page, one flow, multiple flows, etc)

Thanks in advance and I will share what I learn!

Designers of Bluesky, I'm looking for insight from the industry. I'm trying to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between company size and impact a designer makes on a product.

If you work in-house as a product designer, could you answer me these riddles three?

@framer.com I love your product, but unfortunately I won’t renew my subscription until/unless you natively implement password protection on individual pages (workarounds are not secure). I really need this for my portfolio. I would only consider Framer if I needed a basic open content-based site.

Thank you! Mostly hoping that exposing this type of thing will help other job searchers see they’re not alone (and ideally remind companies of the rough state of the market)

Thank you!! Yes, I expected a higher bar of communication from a company who said their bar was so high! Oh well, on to the next prospects :)

I’m here to say it’s okay to be an individual contributor with more than 8 years of experience. Being a leader does not equate to being a manager — and being an experienced lead gets employers the best of both worlds - strategy AND execution!

I recently saw a post from a recruiter saying that senior designers with 4-8 years of experience are currently in the most demand, rather than managers who set vision but aren’t in the day-to-day details.

Hiring managers and recruiters, remember your culture starts with your hiring process. Be honest, even when it’s hard. Be organized, and treat the “incredible humans” in your hiring process like actual humans.

I later found more employee reviews of not only high performance culture, a potential positive, but also delusional hype and problematic burnout and no work-life balance. I’m certain I was wearing rose-colores goggles for this and many other companies.

They asked if I would be willing to wait a few weeks while they fill more urgent roles. Okay, sure, I’ll keep applying and see if they actually follow up. They did not. When I followed up one last time, they asked for another work sample and then ghosted me.

When I got to midstage, they scheduled me for the next day with the head of design for a design challenge interview. Within hours, the head of design viewed my portfolio (likely for the first time) and decided to cancel the interview and that I should be considered for some other role instead.

I recently interviewed with a well-established late stage startup. There’d been a lot of positive signal from employees, and hyperbolic LinkedIn posts (“come join me alongside this incredible team on our rocketship to the moon! 🚀) that initially made me excited at the prospect of working there.

I use it for case studies on my portfolio website — I don’t want to have a password block the whole site but do want password protection for individual case studies

I must say this as clearly as possible: if you have, in the last ten years, thought "I just don't get tech" or that you're "getting old" or "you're not technical," you are the victim - so much of the tech industry is now oriented around making you do stuff rather than doing stuff for you.

IMO, the best reasons to get really comfortable with low fidelity artifacts and designs are:
1. Demonstrate the level of definition or confidence in the solution. The fidelity of the design should match the thinking and alignment that has gone into it.

2. Expose otherwise unseen complexity

Agree with this and recommend following it as much as possible, since that’s also how it translates to semantic HTML best practices and improves accessibility for this reason

ah awesome, thanks — I’ll check that out — the password protection on individual pages was my main reason for leaving but that’s good news they’re making strides with CMS!

I’ve used both quite a bit. I loved Framer, especially for its hi-res video hosting capabilities and ease of designing UI.

Ultimately I returned to Webflow for 2 reasons —
1. Framer doesn’t allow password protection of individual pages, only entire site
2. Lack of CMS related content
