Fake microscopy images generated by AI are indistinguishable from the real thing Materials scientists warn that raw data and replication studies are needed to tackle the looming threat of near-undetectable AI fraud

Modern “journalism” just can’t call out dangerous nonsense can it? “Many experts are sceptical” is putting it far too mildly.

Comprehensive investigation suggests stirrer bars have little impact on reactions Examination of over 300 organic reactions suggests stirring is nothing more than a placebo

Long known for being chemistry's reliable workhorse, it's now being claimed that stirrer bars do next to nothing in the 300+ organic reactions one team examined.

The idea that paracetamol is responsible for autism is the biggest pile of horse manure I’ve ever heard as a scientist. It’s irresponsible, it’s dangerous. It’s anti-scientific political ideology gone mad.

RFK Jr does not just reject vaccines. He rejects science and must step down | Bernie Sanders Kennedy is unfit to be our nation’s leading public health official because he rejects the fundamental principles of modern science

For generations doctors have understood that germs — like bacteria or viruses — cause infectious diseases.

Yet we now have an HHS Secretary casting doubt on the germ theory — the foundation of modern medicine.

That’s not only unacceptable, it is dangerous. RFK Jr. must resign.

X’s dominance ‘over’ as Bluesky becomes new hub for research Data indicates more scholars turning to alternative social media site to post about their work after Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover

“On today’s X, #AcademicTwitter is dead. And most scholars in the world do not want to be active on what the platform has become.” ~ @claesdevreese.bsky.social

Scientia Professor Martina Stenzel

It's in good hands though at the RSC under the stewardship of EiC Martina Stenzel (www.unsw.edu.au/staff/martin...), who was one our first Scientific Editors and also one of the best too!

MH (as we call it internally) was our first journal to use a scientific editor model and introduce "Focus Articles" and "New concepts" boxes so it was a fun journal to get to grips with. I haven't worked on it for about 7 years, but it's still a journal that I care a lot about.

Honestly cannot believe it's been a decade of @materialshorizons.rsc.org. I was the journal coordinator when it started so I remember some of these papers pretty well and was the handling editor for a couple of them as well. #ChemSky #RealTimeChem

Interesting statistics from eLife about their Publish, Review, Curate model. Notably it does come at the expense of quite a high "reject without review" rate.

Update: autistic child has since been suspended from school for 2 days before half term and now banned from the attending holiday camp due to her behaviour. Not sure how we’ll manage Easter or god forbid the summer holidays unless we can find some kind of SEN provision. Not liking 2025 tbh.

Amos B. Smith III (1944-2025) | Department of Chemistry We are deeply saddened to announce that our friend and colleague Amos B. Smith III, Emeritus Professor of Chemistry, has passed away. Amos received both his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Chemistry from Bucknell University in 1966 and his Ph.D. from The Rockefeller University (with William C. Agostain) in 1972. He joined Penn in 1973 (along with a joint appointment at the Monell Chemical Senses Center). Amos was a mainstay in our organic chemistry division and recently celebrated 50 years of service to Penn. He also served as Department Chair from 1988 to 1996.

If I could afford to do that I would but not the case I’m afraid. Just for fun I also caught COVID this week. Yay 2025!

If I’m not particularly active here at the moment it’s really a bandwidth issue with my brain. Between general busy nature of my job & parenting I really don’t have much time for anything. Also your autistic child being excluded from after school club really is not conducive to productivity at all…

All these years of running #RealTimeChem did I miss a trick by not becoming a crazy right wing nut job promoting conspiracies and lies about chemistry? I could have been rich, rich I tell you.

‘Stamp out paper mills’ — science sleuths on how to fight fake research A group of scientists who are experts at spotting fraudulent research outline five essential steps to combat industrialized scientific misconduct.

I'm delighted to share our opinion on #papermills published in Nature. Science is flooded with papers from paper mills.Certain steps can be taken, but this is a challenge that neither universities nor journals are ready to face. Some use paper mills to their advantage.

Devastating for scientists and their research, and everyone who benefits from that research.

I’m not sure if everyone outside academia is aware that a delay or “pause” in grant funding often means the researchers themselves are lost from the field, along with their expertise.

Agreed. He's really young so could be president for the next 70-80 years. He's Kim Jung Un basically. Trump loves North Korea, he saw in that country exactly what he wants. Hell he said so once that he wanted people to treat him as they do KJU. It's sick, but here we are.
