The inquiry drags on. Lightoller spoke today, stoic as ever. Young Bride limped in, wrapped in blankets, still managing to explain more than most senators seem to understand.
They press about ice warnings, speed, lifeboats.
Everyone wants the truth. Few can handle it.

#Olympic seen at Plymouth today, flags at half-mast for her lost sister. A quiet nod while the world points fingers and scribbles headlines. The inquiries continue, but the answers aren’t half as steady as that ship on the horizon.

3rd Officer Pitman briefly takes the stand, where he testifies that, to the best of his knowledge, the ship's log was not saved. #Titanic
Ismay took my seat in that lifeboat. Fortunate for him I chose to go after Rose instead. Now he’s the first called to testify at the inquiry, and the press was quick to label him a “coward.”
A man makes his own luck, but I’m not sure how long his will last. Now, he’s sinking for good. #Titanic #OTD

The Senate inquiry into the #Titanic sinking has begun, chaos in the Waldorf-Astoria ballroom, with people still visibly shaken. Survivors in borrowed coats, questioned by men who’ve never set foot on an ocean liner. The press is having a field day. #OTD
April 18, 1912.
Reporters swarmed like sharks. Desperate for a quote, a photo, a tear.
Most of us from first class slipped away through private exits, hotel cars waiting. We’d had our tragedy. No appetite for headlines.

April 18, 1912 — Pier 54
Thirteen battered lifeboats, lowered and tied alongside the Carpathia, were all that remained of the so-called “unsinkable” Titanic. A pitiful flotilla. Yet they completed the voyage she could not.
Symbolic? Painfully so.
April 18, 1912 – 9:30 PM
The Carpathia docked in New York tonight, Pier 54 swarmed with desperate families, reporters foaming at the mouth, and enough flashbulbs to blind a man. All in the pouring rain, of course.
The voyage ends here. Living with it? That’s the real endurance test.

#Titanic was supposed to dock today. Instead, we're crawling toward New York on the #Carpathia, watching rain pour down on deck, as if the tragedy needed atmosphere.
Survivor names are being telegraphed like stock tickers. No doubt the press will be a circus. Can hardly wait. #OTD
On the Carpathia, matters become tense when rumours that the #Titanic had received ice warnings started to circulate amongst the survivors; these grew to definite statements by the afternoon and soon afterwards, one of the Titanic's officers admitted to it when asked.
Joseph Phillipe Lemercier Laroche died 113 years ago today on the Titanic. Laroche and his children were the only Black passengers.

At sea aboard the Carpathia, the cold clings to us and sleep is a stranger. We drift between stunned silence and frantic roll calls. Some still search the horizon for lifeboats that will never come. #Titanic #OTD
The Carpathia returns to New York
En route to New York, the Carpathia is braving highly variable weather: a strong wind and a heavy sea, dense fog and at midnight, a severe thunderstorm. #Titanic
$75,000 for a violin?
Charming. I’ve misplaced cufflinks worth more.

Titanic survivors on board the Carpathia
The Carpathia's passengers and crew had been generous and had given up their beds to the survivors but there was a dearth of sleeping space, people having to find accommodation on the floor, tables or whatever space was available.
Aboard the Carpathia, I searched every face. Every lifeboat. False hope is a cruel thing. I never saw her again.

Then, dawn broke over an ocean of silence, interrupted only by the sound of oars and grief. The #Carpathia appeared on the horizon like a ghost... too late for most, just in time for the rest.
Collapsible A, half-submerged, freezing water lapping at our knees. Barely afloat. But we held on. Another boat pulled us out, one by one—numb, soaked, silent. #Titanic #OTD
And then, silence… except for the screams.
The sea claims her.

2:20 AM. From a distance, Titanic is just a hulking shadow against a star-swept sky. Then... a crack, a groan, a roar. She splits. No lights, just sound. #Titanic #OTD
April 15, 1912—just moments before the ship broke apart.
The lights flicker and go out. Then a roar... metal bending, breaking. Her final cry. #Titanic #OTD
Clubbed a man over the head with an oar. Reminded me of my Harvard days... though we usually aimed for the water.

The first funnel collapsed... steel cables whipping, bodies gone in an instant. They begged to climb aboard. Mercy is a luxury for those not in peril. I intended to stay dry.
