Poles love nature reserves. They don't necessarily know why (not that you need to). But when a political loudmouth appears, scythes are instantly raised. Talking about reserves gets hard then. Two raised scythes keep you too far apart to hear each other, especially with that idiot still screaming.

Protect Antarctica — or risk accelerating planetary meltdown To keep Earth habitable, humanity must recognize the value of Antarctica and seek to save it from irreversible damage.

“To keep Earth habitable…” Why so alarming one might ask - well think of business as usual scenario and extrapolate. Scary? There is one problem… We are not doing business as usual we are accelerating… The system is NOT linear… #climate

Sebastien Bubeck (@SebastienBubeck) on X | Michal Brennek I took a tour of the "AI in Project Management" courses so you don't have to. My conclusion? Meh. Some are somewhat useful... Most are outdated before the checkout page even loads. Their expert advice is often a masterclass in magical thinking, like telling managers to submit the same lazy prompt three times and expect nuanced results. This isn't a strategy; it's the definition of insanity, just with an API key. Let's be blunt: three-quarters of these courses are just expensive security blankets for people terrified of being left behind. Meanwhile, the power users - the ones actually shaping reality in projects -are lapping the course creators. If you want a taste of the real speed of progress, consider this: while they're still explaining what an LLM is, an LLM just produced a novel mathematical proof. See for yourself. The gap isn't just widening; it's becoming a chasm. https://lnkd.in/di6u5_cw The risks are great; let's make sure so are the rewards.

At 1st I thought that fishing for insights in my digital ocean would require #morecores, well a lot of cpu cores, then I thought what if I can avoid loading/unloading data from disk so #moreram, then it turns out that nvme in #raid0 are slow. Thus balanced approach worked best… I ran out of ram :<

Human influence reduces natural land carbon stocks by 24%, study finds Human activities, such as deforestation and the expansion of agricultural areas, have a massive impact on the natural state of ecosystems. As a result, large amounts of carbon are released into the atmosphere, contributing substantially to anthropogenic climate change.

Texas study reveals heat waves can cause more polluted air Heat waves are becoming more common, severe and long-lasting. These prolonged periods of hot weather are especially dangerous in already hot places like Texas. In 2023, more than 300 people in Texas died from heat, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services, the most since the state began tracking such deaths in 1989. Researchers found it may not only be temperatures that make heat waves unsafe but also the heat-related increase in airborne pollutants.

Yes “during heatwaves there is higher chance of more polluted air”. In pl during the last couple of days we had ridiculous amounts of NOx and O3 #airquality #geophysics #atmospheric #science phys.org/news/2025-08...

Study explains mystery of former crater lakes in the highest mountain range of the Sahara An interdisciplinary research team led by scientists from Freie Universität Berlin and the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology has shown how deep lakes formed more than 9,500 years ago in the craters of the Tibesti Mountains and existed there for more than 5,000 years.

Parker Solar Probe confirms decades-old theoretical models about magnetic reconnection New research led by Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) has confirmed decades-old theoretical models of magnetic reconnection, the process that releases stored magnetic energy to drive solar flares, coronal mass ejections and other space weather phenomena. The data was captured by NASA's Parker Solar Probe (PSP), which is the only spacecraft to have flown through the sun's upper atmosphere.

The Parker Solar Probe might be the most amazing probe ever, with the possible exception of the legendary Voyager probes (I still can't decide!). Earlier this year, I gave a presentation on this mission and mentioned how I couldn't wait for the first papers to be published:

Exceeding functional biosphere integrity limits: Study finds 60% of the world's land area is in a precarious state A new study maps the planetary boundary of "functional biosphere integrity" in spatial detail and over centuries. It finds that 60% of global land areas are now already outside the locally defined safe zone, and 38% are even in the high-risk zone.
