I tried an inter-library loan, hopefully it comes through quickly! Thank you so much!

The article is “Let’s Spend Time Together: Text Messaging Parents to Help Math-Anxious Students”- if you have access to it, I would appreciate it!

Any chance someone with an NCTM membership could send me an article I need for a class I’m taking? 🙏🏻 #ITeachMath

I’m reading that book as well! Just finished Day 6 and it’s really resonating with me. May need to sit with it a bit. Did you read his book 4000 weeks too?

Anything you’re considering getting rid of, put it away (out of sight) for 3 months. If you make it 3 months and no one has needed it, you’re ready to pass it along!

Amie untangles an issue that’s been percolating in math education for a while now- one that’s caused me to disengage a bit. Hoping to learn more and re-engage with a new perspective. “Teaching is too complex, and educational contexts too varied, to be reduced to one-size-fits-all solutions.” 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

You take 10 steps, but there are 9 stairs? Maybe?

Is sub pay the same at all schools?

"Phrases such as 'higher achievement,' 'positive outcomes,' and 'better results' typically refer only to standardized test scores. These are poor indicators of intellectual proficiency and primarily measure either socioeconomic status or the extent of students' training in test-taking skills."

I wonder if this is related to our tendency to go a mile wide and an inch deep?

I feel like of all the sets of numbers, whole numbers are the most intuitive. If they can get that one, the rest sort of work off of that

Off the top of my head- all the whole numbers and their opposites?

Chart comparing required hours of sleep for different age groups

Trying to explain to my 4-year-old that I don’t need as much sleep as she does. This did not help 🤦🏻‍♀️ #badgraphs #ITeachMath #TMWYK

True! I just think it’s more natural with the “new” method. Especially when you can see the place value/zeros.

I really liked your framing in the second note. That’s sort of how I approached factoring and had a great deal of success (or so I thought). I taught the steps independently and put it all together at the end (this is when I used the box method)

I thought it was Thursday ALL DAY. It’s so disappointing when you repeatedly realize tomorrow is not Friday

The changes to tables in docs…I’ll never understand!

That makes sense to me and aligns with my thinking. I was hoping to get some thoughtful push back on the other side, but maybe that won’t happen when I’m mostly asking a feed of math teachers! (Most people who disagree with me haven’t taught math) Perhaps #EduSky would have been a better tag!

I think that there are some pedagogical practices that go across content areas, but for math and reading in particular, there is specific content knowledge that can be helpful to best support students. The model I coach in is not content-based though

…think it’s helpful to be coached/mentored by someone who has content-specific knowledge? Would love to hear others’ perspective to push my thinking on this! (or if you know of research on this topic, would love to hear about that too!)

Hello! I’m so happy to have the #ITeachMath community back ❤️ I taught math for 13 years, but this is my first year as an instructional coach. Something I’ve been struggling with in this new position is the role of content-area “expertise” in the coaching world. (When) do you… 1/2
