It's Shrove Tuesday today, also known as Pancake Day in the UK. You know how much we love baking here at Maths Week Scotland, and pancakes are no different, so here's a wee reminder of how much maths is involved in baking pancakes!

My 6 yo is always busy with projects. Currently, she is designing party hats for her dolls. I told her it was really impressive and she said “what? I’m just cutting out triangles, rolling them up, and taping them.” I asked her how she knew to do that and she said “I just saw it in my head.” #tmwyk

3yo fan of Numberblocks turns to this page: “Dada, ten is not a square” #tmwyk
Notice? Wonder? How many?

A much needed game break with children. We're working on partitions today!

Child: double 87 is… double 80 is 160 and (quietly chants double 1 is 2, double 2 is 4, double 3 is 6…. […] double 7 is 14)
— it’s 87!
He operates a lot with counting up and a lot of memorization. And he’s recently combining these skills pretty well!

My 6yo asked me this morning:
"If 0 + 0 = 1, would 8 times 0 be 4?"
I wrote a blog post about it.

Question is Shade 1/5 of the shape blue. A rectangle is divided into ten equal parts by one horizontal divide and four vertical ones. Two parts are shaded: top right and bottom left.
Similarly, 3/4 of an eight-part rectangle is shaded irregularly.
Shade shape B so both shapes have an equal amount shaded. Shape A is a rectangle divided into three by two horizontal lines, the top two are shaded. Shape B is a similar rectangle with nine regions, shaded irregularly.
Similarly, half of 16 regions are shaded irregularly.
My son, everybody.

A Desmos plot of a red square with vertices at (+-1, +-1) and a red circle of radius 2 centred on the origin. The "average" plot consists of a set of four blue arcs in between, and a black sort of shamrock shape inside the square.
Interesting question from 11yo Young Bill: what's the 'average' of a circle and a square? After a couple of questions, he clarified that he meant in terms of distance from their common centre, and he (quite impressively, imo) built the thing in Geogebra. I've […]

We have a text thread with a bunch of friends sharing the ridiculous things we and our kids say.
Today's gem "Most people have an above average number of arms"
Feels like a good time to discuss mean vs mode

He’d made this map of seven regions where the two that are brown here are discontiguous parts of the same country, as are the blues. This isn’t covered by the FCT, but still - what a thing for a 10 year old to come up with!

A big outer green region. Inside this effectively a line of squares: brown, blue, then one that’s vertically separated half grey, half dark green, then brown, then blue.
When I woke, my son greeted me with a proposed counterexample to the Four Colour Theorem. He said he’d woken with the idea.

Talking about multiplication/division with my kid, and they told us that ½ of 12 is 6. So I asked what a ⅓ of 12 is. They figured it out ("8+4 is 12 and 8 is two 4s, so that's three 4s") and when my spouse asked about ¼ of 12, kiddo grinned and immediately said "three 4s is four 3s!"

Very excited to welcome author David MacPhail to the National Museum of Scotland this morning for “Legends, Myths and Maths: A Journey Through Scotland” - exploring the myths, legends, wildlife and landscapes of Scotland, with hidden maths.

“Reading from left to right. And then addition and subtraction, again in either order.”
I think he’s got it. I explained how multiplication & division are the same thing, and addition & subtraction. He seemed fine with it.
We told him lots of people struggle with this. “Why? It’s easy!”

Today my son (10) had his first lesson on what he called “BODMAS”.
Me: “What’s that?”
Him: “Brackets. Order. Division. Multiplication. Except you can do those two in either order as you go through.”
“What do you mean ‘go through’?”
