How good is "good"? Now with even more words! On a scale of 0 to 10, where 0 is "very negative" and 10 is "very positive", in general, how positive or negative would the following word/phrase be to someone when you used it to describe something? Followed by a series of graphs with the numbers 0 to 10 along the horizontal axis, and words such as "abysmal", "bad", decent", "superb" etc on the vertical axis. Each graph shows a peak at the number that most people attributed to that word. The more negative words have a red graph, the middle ones have an amber graph, and the more positive ones have a green graph.

#mathstoday I've taught lots of mechanics over the years, usually getting annoyed at stats and the necessary magic maths dust that gets sprinkled to gloss over the underlying lack of a coherent structure.

It's therefore quite a surprise to find that I've spent all evening doing stats STEP qs. Fun!

At first glance, a driven journey of half an hour is better than a 90-min train ride. But given that the Telegraph journalist spent an hour in the car and her husband half an hour, it was actually the same length of time for both car and for train.

#mathstoday reminding yr11 of some of the great features of the casio classwiz. We looked at HCF, LCM, product of primes, percentage button and substitution. And this is only scratching the surface!

Linear regression on CO2 data displays slope of 1.66

Quadratic regression on CO2 data with quadratic term 0.01346

Atmospheric CO2 data with a model plotted that nearly matches the data. There is noticeable phase offset in the center of the plot.

In #Mathstoday I demonstrated how AI can be used to aid revision by generating similar questions. I've found this useful recently and hope my Y12 students can do this to prepare for end of year exams

Is it SUVAT? For each question, decide whether the question involves constant acceleration (use the SUVAT equations) or non-constant acceleration (use differentiation/integration)

In #MathsToday I find that my #ALevelMaths students often try to use the SUVAT equations for non-constant acceleration questions (when they should use calculus instead) so I have invented a twist on the classic game "Is it cake?"... which I'm calling "Is it SUVAT?" 😅🍰

In #MathsToday I tried @theteacherwins.bsky.social's idea of getting the students to take turns answering an #ALevelMaths question, to focus on clearly setting out their steps, so that the other person could pick up from where they got up to. It went really well, and they seemed to enjoy it!
