How good is "good"? Now with even more words! On a scale of 0 to 10, where 0 is "very negative" and 10 is "very positive", in general, how positive or negative would the following word/phrase be to someone when you used it to describe something?

Followed by a series of graphs with the numbers 0 to 10 along the horizontal axis, and words such as "abysmal", "bad", decent", "superb" etc on the vertical axis. Each graph shows a peak at the number that most people attributed to that word. The more negative words have a red graph, the middle ones have an amber graph, and the more positive ones have a green graph.

I really like this graph. Pondering how I could use it in a maths lesson... #MathsToday

#mathstoday I've taught lots of mechanics over the years, usually getting annoyed at stats and the necessary magic maths dust that gets sprinkled to gloss over the underlying lack of a coherent structure.

It's therefore quite a surprise to find that I've spent all evening doing stats STEP qs. Fun!

At first glance, a driven journey of half an hour is better than a 90-min train ride. But given that the Telegraph journalist spent an hour in the car and her husband half an hour, it was actually the same length of time for both car and for train.

#MathsToday Running our math contest's solution session is always fun chaos, and in Math of Climate we finished (at long last) the Period 3 Implies Chaos proof!

now I just need to write a homework introducing climate indices 😬

In #MathsToday I have been collating Mechanics questions from the last few years.

Students seem to struggle with pulleys.
Something to discuss at the #ALevelMaths Teacher Network.

#mathstoday reminding yr11 of some of the great features of the casio classwiz. We looked at HCF, LCM, product of primes, percentage button and substitution. And this is only scratching the surface!

Last lesson of new content with my year 11 today. Everything after the holidays is going to be revision. I already have my list of topics for the starters and lessons.

In #Mathstoday I demonstrated how AI can be used to aid revision by generating similar questions. I've found this useful recently and hope my Y12 students can do this to prepare for end of year exams

In #MathsToday we introduced the coefficient of friction, both horizontally and on an inclined plane. Followed up by a really purposeful parents' evening for some of my Y2 #ALevelMaths students. Final push now, I love this time of year!

1) Helpful feedback from students on a colleague's new activity in Principles of Data Analysis
2) Applied Stats ran short for the first time since I switched to strands
3) A student who had solved the problem of the week asked about my offhand mention of doing it with linear algebra

#mathstoday exploring quadratic graphs with yr8. Love sketching and discussing turning points, lines of symmetry and roots. Also great to discuss how this knowledge is needed at ks4, a-level and beyond.

Had a further maths student appear at my classroom door today with a beaming smile on her face, as she had done one of the second chance papers and got 100% (having dropped quite a few marks the first time around) 😁 #MathsToday

Is it SUVAT?
For each question, decide whether the question involves constant acceleration (use the SUVAT equations) or non-constant acceleration (use differentiation/integration)

Is it SUVAT? For each question, decide whether the question involves constant acceleration (use the SUVAT equations) or non-constant acceleration (use differentiation/integration)

In #MathsToday I find that my #ALevelMaths students often try to use the SUVAT equations for non-constant acceleration questions (when they should use calculus instead) so I have invented a twist on the classic game "Is it cake?"... which I'm calling "Is it SUVAT?" 😅🍰

Year 8 had a go at perpendicular bisectors (went well) angle bisectors (less well) and equilateral triangles (well again) with a compass.
Had the original lines and angles drawn on a worksheet so one less thing for them to do.

An A Level mechanics question on inclined planes, with the answers in two different coloured pens. The students had 60 seconds each before passing the paper to their partner to continue. I think with a regular group I may have given them 90 seconds, but these were further maths students so 60 was enough.

In #MathsToday I tried @theteacherwins.bsky.social's idea of getting the students to take turns answering an #ALevelMaths question, to focus on clearly setting out their steps, so that the other person could pick up from where they got up to. It went really well, and they seemed to enjoy it!

If I tossed a coin 100 times, how many heads would persuade you that the coin isn't fair?

Can think intuitively, model the coin tosses (here it is in @desmos.com: www.desmos.com/calculator/d..., clock the text below the chart to repeat), then formally introduce a binomial test.
