A pair of binoculars and a camera with two books: the Bradt guide to Somaliland and a field guide to the Birds of the Horn of Africa.

In #MathsToday this week, I'll be visiting Sheikh Pharo Secondary School in Somaliland, where I'll be leading some CPD with the maths department and working with pupils preparing for their IGCSEs and AS Levels.

Might also manage to fit in a spot of birdwatching...

#MathsToday not-quite-panicked skimming of @mktippett.bsky.social's book before Math of Climate to figure out what I should say about time series and spectra in ~40 minutes of class, but it went well! Didn't do a ton, but good conversations looking at the MJO and then talking about AR models.

#MathsToday Trying to prepare for coming back after Shared Parental Leave and learning that I need to add to my list organising KS4 Schemes of Work as Edexcel aren't transferring the Scheme of Work builder to ActiveHub. Always disappointing when functionality gets taken away rather than added.

#MathsToday: Great day in Applied Stats doing inference for means! Oreo activity and a card sort with different hypothesis setups.

And a reminder for me that clear expectations and matter-of-fact-ness help a lot in classrooms running well.

#mathstoday thought I'd get away from this in 2 weeks but I'm maths today I taught my wife about metric weight conversion after I moved 3 tonnes of stone in 2 days by myself (50 bags per tonne) at one point she said "at least the stuff going on top will be lighter because the stones are smaller" 😂

#MathsToday Started reading and discussing a paper about age-period-cohort effects with an independent study student.

Did not have enough planned for confidence interval day in Stat Analysis 🙃

Nov 2024 GCSE Paper 6 (Higher tier) from OCR GCSE maths exam.
8 equations are given and candidates need to identify which of them describes the two given graphs.
The first is fine (a fractional exponential).
The second gives the first quadrant of a circle, which doesn't match with any of them. The closest is y = the square root of (4-squared subtract x^2) but this would give a semi-circle.

I've been enjoying some OCR GCSE maths questions.
Not sure about this one, though.

In #MathsToday we started our feature-engineering project with 0s and 1s from MNIST

Given a spreadsheet or DataFrame where each row contains 784 pixel values representing an image of a hand-written digit, how can we distinguish a 0 from a 1?

TIL: A German colloquialism for "quadratic formula" is Mitternachtsformel which translates, literally, to "middle-of-the-night-formula". That is, a formula which is so deeply memorized that if awakened in the middle of the night, the student could recite it. #iteachMath #MathsToday

Cuisenaire rods showing the pairs of digits adding to 10. Each rod is a different colour and represents one digit, orange is 10, blue is 9, brown is 8, black is 7, dark green is 6, yellow is 5, pink is 4, light green is 3, red is 2 and white is 1. The equations are written next to each pairing.

#MathsToday Magnificent Monday Maths groups with Megan.
We have been focusing on our 'Make 10' pairs & today used cuisenaire rods.
Students got one rod of each colour, lined them up in size order. They saw the 1 fitted with the 9 to make 10, etc.
All of them could then see the pairs = win!

How good is "good"? Now with even more words! On a scale of 0 to 10, where 0 is "very negative" and 10 is "very positive", in general, how positive or negative would the following word/phrase be to someone when you used it to describe something?

Followed by a series of graphs with the numbers 0 to 10 along the horizontal axis, and words such as "abysmal", "bad", decent", "superb" etc on the vertical axis. Each graph shows a peak at the number that most people attributed to that word. The more negative words have a red graph, the middle ones have an amber graph, and the more positive ones have a green graph.

I really like this graph. Pondering how I could use it in a maths lesson... #MathsToday
