August starts tomorrow and the evenings are getting noticeably darker here in Sweden. Tonight the sun sets already at 9:25 pm. Sweden is on the same latitudes as Alaska. While the climate is milder, the ebb and flow of the light impacted preindustrial Sweden more than anything. #genealogy

I've fixed it by wearing an eye mask — before bed and the whole night—just to help my body wind down.

Now do the winter version, with days dark as the night and you'll understand how cyclic life is for the Swedes. ❄️

Congrats to Sweden on its National Day June 6! 🇸🇪

How light is Sweden in June? ☀️

Light enough that when I wake up at 3 am I have to check the clock — because it looks like daytime.

Sleeping without curtains? Results: jittery 24/7. Like having way too much coffee. ☕️

Let’s clear the dust off your family history—one record at a time.

Ever had a Swedish record stump you?

That’s not just a reading mistake—it’s a clue to the choices your ancestors
made, and the context of a society in reform. 🕵️‍♀️

If you’re circling the same ancestor or record and just need a fresh
pair of eyes (with a dash of Swedish context), this is for you.

Why? Because sometimes all it takes is one word.

Like the time someone asked why all the kids in their ancestor’s family
were “adopted” in the 1800s. Plot twist: “Odöpt” means “not christened,”
not “adopted.”

You send me one question (plus an image if you want). I send you back a

step.

🇸🇪 Stuck on one weird word in a Swedish genealogy record and suddenly you
can’t get any further? 🧱

I’ve spent years trying to create a service for people who love the detective work but just need a nudge—not a full-blown genealogist takeover. And I think I’ve finally cracked it. 😌

"'Those types' on the America liners" by sociologist Arne Nilsson, fresh from the library. 50% of staff on ships from Gothenburg to US were male homosexuals. The direct lines between Sweden and America started *after* the emigration wave, but I'm still intrigued by this insight into the travels.

Planning the dessert section of Christmas dinner. 🍨 I want to serve fudge, truffles, Turkish delight (?), cookies, and pastry. Flavors to cross off are chocolate, mint, orange, saffron, and ginger. Time to decide how to combine them! 🎄

Hi 👋

Years researching: 15

Fun fact/Wildest discovery: Most interesting has been discovering ancestors from a national minority. I suspect there's one more during the last 200 years, but I've yet to prove it.
