My condolences to Dr. Sheila Colla’s family and friends. She was an inspiration from afar and the few times we met. She absolutely motivated me to be more tenacious in my work and I admire so much how she embodies the value of community. Your power and presence will be missed 🐝🐝🐝

NASA-FIRMS Fire Information for Resource Management System

I have been trying to keep track of the California fires today. Here are a few resources I like for tracking the fire location, including a couple sites that collate satellite data. Do you have other good resources to share? (1/n)

The prescribed burn was a continuation of vegetative fuel reduction work we started in 2023 following the Stanford Wildfire Management Plan. Next up is continued monitoring and maintenance of our fuel break & shaded fuel break to mitigate wildfire risk AND maintain ecological integrity. Stay tuned!

Intentional burning awakens a fire follower: a botanical account | Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve

It was also amazing that we found a rare endemic plant reemerge in the burned area after decades of not being observed at the preserve- Western Bewildering Bushmallow

I am also very proud of my intern, Zander Opperman, who wrote a report to assess the cultural changes and collaboration required to bring good fire to university lands. He also participated in the burn crew as a certified type II wildland firefighter!

Lots of cool research was integrated into this burn event where scientist looked at pre/post burn conditions to study biogeochemical responses, soil isotopes, moisture, entomopathogenic organisms, seed and veg recovery, smoke particulates, and nutrient & metal concentrations in water & sediment.

Here's how Stanford researchers are studying wildfires to mitigate risk as fire season approaches You may have noticed some smoke along the Peninsula Monday in the Portola Valley. It was deliberate.

And local news! MAJOR APPRECIATION for the AMAZING Burn Crew and Burn Boss (Phil Dye) that made this happen! abc7news.com/california-w...
