Amtrak ridership snapshot for February.
In part due to some severe snowstorms, Amtrak suffered their first systenwide ridership loss since the Covid pandemic. Iowa's 2 routes saw above-average declines as a result.
While Metra and UP still can't get along, they have secured a long term access deal with BNSF for their busiest weekday line.
Highly recommend this book. Tired of pain at the pump? Tired of the hassle and expense of car ownership? There is a way out. This book explains how (and how we got here in the first place).

The upcoming surface transportation reauthorization must build on the progress and achievements of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
Two weeks ago, NJ Transit was announced as a "key partner" in the Penn Station rebuild plans - but the "home agency" is still not involved.
'Top concern of parking' means that we need to not only expand transit, but encourage units with direct access to good transit. Only way to prevent density from turning into gridlock
We once were that kid. Some of us still are.
Okay CTA. This is a good sign.

Iowa transit ridership for February
Ridership mostly up across the state, with Iowa City/Cedar Rapids losing a bit.
A project first proposed through a partnership between Amtrak and the New York City Economic Development Corporation in 2019 under then-Mayor de Blasio has been revived by current NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani
The transit plans for those attending World Cup matches this summer around the country have, so far, not been kind to those who are just trying to get around for work, school, appointments, etc.
Negative effects of more highway noise and pollution notwithstanding, we hope @governor.ny.gov familiarizes herself with the studies demonstrating that highway projects have been producing diminishing returns for ~4 decades and investments in alternatives to driving produce positive economic return
For more on why this is a terrible idea that will increase the very administrative burdens agencies claim concern over, read our Against Patchwork Funding paper: calelectricrail.org/against-patc...
Key issues:
1) Yes, should be more trains. But get busy living or get busy dying. There are no trains to Boulder now.
2) No fed $ = quicker implementation, no admin malfeasance
3) They're gonna need some high/low platform-capable coaches relatively quickly, maybe some aging NE commuter rail cars?
As highlighted in our press release from last Friday, these cuts move the nation "in the wrong direction for affordability, mobility, and safety" right when Americans are facing record-high travel costs.
