Dammit!
lol
The strained responses of “Oh god yeah, that must have been so hard for you” were really something to behold.
Fondly remembering the time that an online acquaintance did some internet trauma-dumping and their foundational trauma was attending Columbine. Not surviving the massacre, but attending the school in the 2000s, after it had occurred.
We call Baby Boomers “The Me Generation” for a reason, folks
At this point I have to think that the only real fans left are people who love Marvel Studios and the MCU, specifically. They love the format, its aesthetic, the stupid ARG/“Easter egg” marketing strategies, etc.
Phil Spector biopic that ends with his receiving a call to work on the sessions for Starsailor's 2003 album Silence is Easy
Queen’s hits, famously written and recorded by people who weren’t Queen.
Apparently they end the film in 1988 lol. Did he make any albums after Bad? Not according to his officially-sanctioned biopic.
It's weird because it feels like Jackson's kind of turned into a semi-fictional character where people could say "Well, the songs are good and he's not around anymore..." Drawing attention to him having been a real person with a movie that won't address any of the bad stuff seems counterproductive.
I wouldn't count it out, tbh. I've noticed Allen's films creeping back onto the front pages of streaming services, I think they're testing the waters for a rehabilitation/revision of his image.
Something worth asking: would Questlove — or anyone with Questlove’s level of fame or influence in the entertainment industry — stick their neck out for a gauzy hagiography of Woody Allen?
Questlove stopped being an actual artist around like, 2010, but his current status as just like, The Dean of American Pop Culture is really tiresome.
Questlove hopping on Instagram to slobber all over the Michael Jackson movie and talk about how it’s going to save the film industry is not exactly surprising, but like, come the fuck on dude. We all saw the documentary.
The "private prisons" line many people use is well-intended but misleading. For-profit prisons incarcerate less than 10% of the prison population. The problem isn't for-profit prisons... it's the American institution of prison altogether.
Thinking back on when I saw Ted Leo rip through Shake the Sheets in a half hour flat then proceed to crumple my heart like a piece of paper with this Lisa O’Neill cover. The whole crowd was rapt so the quality of the video is actually great youtu.be/6vTvgmcY6UE
I love when a guy has been on Jeopardy for 28 days and you get anecdotes like "I played Kingdom Hearts once on twitch"
I do think takes like this should look at what was on American television at the time. Due to limited budgets and content restrictions, television just couldn't do mature programing like cinema could. Now it can. That naturally changes what draws at the box office
people act like the star wars prequels are these amazingly prescient texts about the rise of fascism and then you watch them and that’s like 5 minutes of screen time total across the trilogy. the rest of it is either racism or guys waving glow sticks around
I think people are more comfortable assigning blame for social deterioration to nerd culture because it’s a pretty convenient scapegoat (lots of annoying fans, lots of bad products, it completely saturated the cultural output) but are the other monocultures of sports and technology much healthier?
kinda bleak when the Seinfeld quote bot has to censor the word “sex”
Alan Moore’s been trying to make this point for 15 years and it’s holding less water by the day. And he actually wrote that stuff!
“Our social politics are regressing, the President has launched a years-long ethnic cleansing campaign at home and started a potentially civilization-ending war in the Middle East. My diagnosis? Too many people read comics and played video games.”
Donald Trump isn’t getting on social media to promote superhero movies or comics or RPGs. He’s going to UFC events.
Always a little funny when people try to diagnose society’s problems as being caused by comics or video games or blockbuster films when the real nexus of reactionary death drive our society has situated itself at the Intersection of sports and gambling.
don't want to dogpile on the guy who posted "childish mass media = politics of infantile regression" because I have humored that idea myself in the past, but in this case it seems like a correlation/causation error and people could be petulant twerps over popcult since pre-WWII anyways
BUT ALSO...
For your 4/20 viewing pleasure, I found an account on YouTube that posts VHS rips of old Adult Swim broadcasts:
