This one almost defies description, it’s hard to believe something this magnificent comes out of a shrivelled turd of a tuber. A ball the size of a grapefruit, the petals are curled in like tubes cut on the diagonal. The outside of the tube is a deep crimson, the inside streaked with a peach gold that gives the effect of a tropical sunset. This is the magic of gardening.
Sunflowers stand tall against the morning sky. Most are dark yellow with brown/orange centres, one is bright yellow. My favourite is a gorgeous dusty pink with a ring of yellow in the centre. I think it’s the autumn beauty variety I’ve been trying to grow the past few years! This year none that I planted came up. These are all growing in the middle of the gravel path! The rest of the seeds get devoured by birds in autumn.
