HMS Illustrious after a bomb hit on the aft section of the flight deck. A large hole is pictured, with smoke coming from the rear of the ship. Sailors are seen on the flight deck attending to the damage.

While the armored flight deck would limit the size of the air wing, the Illustrious proved to be quite durable, enduring a savage bombing escorting convoys near Malta, and later kamikaze attacks in the Pacific. She most well known for carrying out the attack on the Italian fleet at Taranto

This week’s episode is all about air power in Burma - Rob and I give an overview for the whole campaign, as always, we will return to the topic in future series.

Some damn remarkable flying out there. A wholly different prospect to Europe. SOE/Force 136 couldn't have done it without the RAF & USAAF, nor could the Chindits, or 14 Army. Here's something I said earlier:

Ep9 Flying Tigers to Dakotas isn't just about P40s & C47s though-air power in Burma is also aboutthe arrival of Spitfires in 1943 helped win air superiority&Hurribombers, Thunderbolts, Vengeances&more attacked Japanese bunkers. Liberators&other med&hvy aircraft also took part in strategic bombing.

A pilot stands in front of a 152 Squadron Spitfire in Burma. The aircraft has a leaping black Jaguar painted above the roundel on the rear fuselage.

Staying in theatre…this aircraft features in one of my Gunston books. (Source:Wikipedia!)

And the Lizzie, don't forget Lizzie! This from the AWM website shows Japanese officers being flown in to SOE teams to help convince their mates the war really was over...

Billington

1 Two days trips completed in the last few days. One with Colin on Wednesday and then another with Mag today.

Some of the memorials I visited. First, the memorial to Platt and Billington of 8 Para - probably murdered by von Luck's men

Friday at 7pm I’m on @ww2tv.bsky.social for Thunder Run Meiktila 1945 - 80 years ago the campaign in and around Meiktila raged from 21 Feb to 28(ish) of March.

One thing I’ll argue was that it was the greatest all-arms manoeuvre battle of the Second World War!
