The Alchemist's Cabin | Substack 🖤We publish poetry, short fiction, and art that makes us feel something. 🖤Free Submissions! 🖤Accepting submissions!🖤 Thank you for being here🖤

Pay to play definitely keeps me from submitting, and it's made me decide to focus on spaces that feel warm rather than exclusive. The journal I mentioned exists on Substack, which might be a really smart place for lit mags to live. substack.com/@thealchemis...

Sometimes progress is not progress. I am seeing this from the parent end.

I submitted to a journal yesterday that pays a very small stipend to those whose work is selected, but also gives submitters the option to donate the fee back to the publication if selected. It was such a nice option for this very broke artist and writer.

Sensory Seeking or Sensory Avoidant Quiz My sensory love story and a just for fun quiz

My sensory love story ends with a dog and starts with a quiz to help you discern where you lie on the sensory spectrum. kohne.substack.com/p/sensory-qu... #sensory #housekeeping #oppositesattract #schnauzer

I changed my newsletter name to Sensory Housekeeping from Neurospicy Housekeeping. I realized that sensory is more inclusive term and doesn't annoy quite as many people.

I read through this thread to make sure I felt the same.

How to be deaf Part 3: Embracing deafness

Sometimes it seems like deafness is the last frontier in inclusivity. People who embrace diversity and all expressions of humanity still expect deaf and hard of hearing people to want to appear hearing. My experience: kohne.substack.com/p/how-to-be-... #deaf #hardofhearing #disability #ableism

No replies yet, but I only just started really using this account so my follower count is very low. I think I might share the idea on Substack, where the algorithm loves me. Messaging you now!

Of course! We just made up this club today. I'll be here, and with your permission I'll DM you my email in case I forget to check in here for a while.

Yes, definitely DM when we're ready to email. I like the idea of once a week and one chapter so we don't get overwhelmed, and we'll be at the same point in one another's books. I'm an artist type who writes, so, sharing might actually motivate me to edit.

Maybe, as our drafts are unpublishable, we can forgive errors and read the messy process. I wonder how many characters DMs allow, but I think you're right. We could paste a chapter in an email and send it that way, maybe on Sundays.

I think my new friend @birdographer.bsky.social and I may start an unpublishable book club. We'll share the unpublishable books we write with one another, so our too short or unfinished work gets to be experienced by someone.

We could start! Too many members would be overwhelming. If we grow, people can pair up in groups of 2 or 3. Or we could share our unpublishable work in installments, like Dickens.

We can have a book club for unpublishable books! I also like the idea of no critique. I mean, we already know they're unpublishable. What a cool club, though.

It's so nice to enter a world isn't it? You reminded me of one I abandoned about fixing up an old house in a nowhere town. I just couldn't really find the middle or the end. I wonder what we could do with these!

I agree. Two years ago I wrote a fiction book about a girl who goes walking and it's possible I'll never publish it, but it still brings me joy.

I think that would still be a good use of time.

The quiet power of asking questions Reveal assumptions, reveal intention

Today I wrote about how asking questions can keep us from carrying what is not ours, and save us from assigning our adult narratives to children. To illustrate my point is my artwork about how I like to cokeout. kohne.substack.com/p/dont-forge... #parenting #emotionallabor #relationships

How to be deaf Part 2: Internalized audism

We don't really talk about the lifetime labor we sign deaf and hard of hearing kids up for when we decide on an oral only approach. I share the work of listening in today's post: kohne.substack.com/p/how-to-be-... #deaf #hoh #audism #hearingloss #oralism #disability #speechtherapy

Executive Function Solutions for Kids (and other humans in progress) Some skills we build and others we work with

How to be deaf Part 1: Ordinary evil at the DMV

In my paid post today I share about hearing aids and lipreading and growing up oral only. There is a bit of a free preview. In this series I discuss the "hearing impaired" identity I grew up under and embrace a deaf, hoh identity. kohne.substack.com/p/how-to-be-... #hardofhearing #deaf #disability

I've also suffered from labeling, and as an adult I avoid specifics. Which is funny because today specific labels are very much a part of identity. I would be interested to read your experience if you write about it.

Your stance is totally valid! I think we really need more vocabulary. I used to like differently abled, but then we started embracing disabled, and I liked that. Honestly, I would be very interested in your take, but I understand not wanting to invite an argument on social!

I read the post because I was drawn in by this quote. I wonder if it might apply to more than an anxiety diagnosis. Diagnosis can often be a relief. But sometimes, I feel like our terms are so narrow.

1 month ago 2 0 1 0

Interesting convo! I chose neurospicy because my understanding is that neurodivergence is technically innate. I wanted a term to include unique minds shaped by childhood PTSD, language deprivation, TBI, and to include non diagnosis people like HSPs and gifted. Neurospicy felt like a good umbrella.
